    Local roundup: Conn women rout Mitchell in opener

    New London - Three players scored in double figures as the Connecticut College women's basketball team opened its season with a 76-43 victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

    Liz Malman led the Camels with 17 points while Willa McKinley added 16 and Jenna Lovett finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Carlee Smith added seven assists and four steals.

    Diamond Thomas scored 14 points to lead the Mariners (0-2) and Jessica Shepherd finished with 13.

    Conn took control of this game from early, using an 11-point run to open a 21-4 lead less than nine minutes into the game. The Camels forced Mitchell into 32 turnovers and held a 53-34 rebounding edge.

    In another game:

    • Carynn Bartolucci scored 24 points as UConn-Avery Point defeated Bristol Community College 68-59. Sydney Swanson added 20 points and 19 rebounds for the Pointers while Briana Padewski had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

    Men's basketball

    • Avery Point's Keith Porter had 25 points and 13 rebounds in a losing cause as Bristol CC edged the Pointers, 72-71. Ibo Rivera had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Avery (1-4) and Matt and Ryan Wallack each scored 11.

    Men's hockey

    • UConn junior Joey Ferriss scored his first goal of the season as the Huskies and RPI skated to a 1-1 overtime tie before 3,879 fans at the XL Center in Hartford. The Huskies (2-5-4) return to Hartford this weekend for a pair of Hockey East games against No. 11 Vermont (Friday at 5:30 p.m.) and No. 3 Boston University (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.).

    Goalie Scott Diebold made 33 saves for RPI (5-7-1), including 13 in the third period when the Huskies pressed to take the lead. Drew Melanson scored the lone goal for RPI late in the second period. Rob Nichols made 24 saves in goal for UConn.

    Black Wolves lacrosse

    • Fans can purchase individual game tickets for the New England Black Wolves' inaugural season on Thursday at 10 a.m. Tickets are at $50, $30 and $15, and fans can purchase tickets to all nine regular season home games at Mohegan Sun Arena at Ticketmaster.com or by calling the Mohegan Sun Box Office at (860) 862-8499. The Black Wolves their 2015 season on Jan. 2 against the Buffalo Bandits at 7 p.m.

    H.S. football

    • Advance ticket sales for the Thanksgiving Day game between rivals Ledyard and Fitch will take place Monday and Tuesday in the main offices of both schools from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Pre-game tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students. All tickets the day of the game, which begins at 10 a.m. at Fitch, will be $5.
