    Local roundup: Porter scores 46 in Avery Point loss

    Groton - UConn-Avery Point's Keith Porter scored 46 points, but the Pointers lost to Roxbury Community College 91-84 in a men's basketball game on Saturday.

    Porter, the former New London High School standout, also had nine rebounds. Dylan Conley scored 15 and Ryan Wallack had 12 assists for Avery Point (3-8). Charles Nedd-Arujo had 37 points, including nine 3-pointers, for Roxbury.

    In other games:

    • Sean Hoehn had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in St. Thomas More's 77-57 loss to Bridgton Academy. UConn commit Steve Enoch had 10 points and seven rebounds while Sterling Taplin added eight points, four rebounds and four assists for Chancellors

    Women's basketball

    • Briana Padewski scored 12 points and Carynn Bartolucci added 10 in UConn Avery Point's 106-34 loss to Roxbury Community College.

    H.S. fencing

    • Hector Vargus went undefeated in Norwich Free Academy's fencing wins over Ledyard and Griswold. Amanda Cilley had a perfect record for the NFA girls in wins over Ledyard and Griswold.

    In boys' action, NFA beat Ledyard, 6-3, in foil and epee competition and defeated Griswold 9-0 in foil and 7-2 in epee.

    In girls' action, NFA beat Ledyard, 6-3, in foil and 5-4, in epee, while shutting out Griswold in the former and winning 8-1 in the latter.

    Ledyard swept Griswold, winning boys' epee (7-2) and foil (6-3) and girls' epee (8-1) and foil (9-0).

    • Waterford hosted East Lyme and New London. In boys' foil, East Lyme beat Waterford, 5-4 and New London, 6-3. Waterford defeated New London, 5-4.

    In girls' foil, Waterford's Ashley Thibeau was the high scorer in wins over New London, 8-1, and East Lyme, 5-4. East Lyme beat New London, 5-4. In boys' epee, East Lyme's Ian Peitzh led the way in a 6-3 win over Waterford. Kirsten Staller powered Waterford over East Lyme, 8-1, in girls' epee.

    H.S. cross country

    • St. Bernard School sophomore Ellen Arvidson placed 74th out of 165 runners in the 15-16 year old division at the USATF National Junior Olympic cross country meet in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She finished the 5,000 meter race in 20 minutes, 50 seconds.

    Johnson dedication

    • There will be a ceremony today at the James Johnson Basketball Court at Toby May Park in New London, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

    A plaque and stone will be dedicated in honor of Johnson, an AAU and former New London High School girls' basketball coach, who died in 2013.
