Local basketball roundup: Sutherland leads Coast Guard to victory
New London - Torie Sutherland scored 15 points and had 18 rebounds as the Coast Guard women's basketball team beat WPI 58-57 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game on Wednesday night.
Sutherland's 3-pointer with 30 seconds to go snapped a 55-55 tie and came after Coast Guard (8-7, 4-4) had missed five straight free throws. Gill Gerton came off the bench for score 13 for Coast Guard.
In other games:
• Amanda Garcia had 29 points and 14 rebounds as Mitchell College beat Newbury 66-59 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Jessica Shepherd scored 11 and Samantha Ryan of Quaker Hill came off the bench to score 10 for Mitchell (4-9, 4-3).
Girls
• Claudia Pagnozzi-Schwam had 10 points and five rebounds as Williams forced 19 steals to win its first game of the season, 27-24, over Hyde-Woodstock.
Paola Vangjeli had seven points and nine steals for the Blues (1-6).
• Waterford's Mia Brennan scored a game-high 14 points as the Lancers beat Montville 46-43 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division game.
Shea Spellman scored 12 and Vanessa Kobyluck had 10 points for Waterford (8-3, 3-2) and Taylor LaVallie led Montville (7-6, 2-3) with 10 points.
• Maggie Treacy had 22 points to pace unbeaten Canton to its 54-36 win over St. Bernard. Emily Briggs scored 15 for the Warriors (11-0). Caitlyn Dittman had 19 points for the Saints (6-6) and Kaitlyn Berkel had seven points and 10 rebounds.
Boys
• Williams School posted its first win of the season, beating MacDuffie School, 49-28. Jake Parizo led the Blues with 13 points while Liam Tresnan had 12 points and five rebounds and Harrison Hall added five points and seven rebounds.
• Cheney Tech beat Grasso Tech 71-38 in a Constitution State Conference game. Cyrus Connors led Grasso Tech with nine points.
• Tickets for tonight's Ledyard-New London game at Ledyard High School will go on sale at the door beginning at 5. All tickets will be priced at $5.
Men
• Springfield College led 50-20 at halftime and went on to beat Coast Guard 95-52 in a NEWMAC game. Micah Baldez led Coast Guard (5-11, 1-4) with 10 points.
