    Local roundup: Montville advances four wrestlers to State Open quarters

    New Haven - Montville High School advanced four wrestlers to the quarterfinal round of the CIAC State Open tournament on Friday night at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

    Noah Caskey (106 pounds), Joel Morth (120), Tommy Wynosky (132) and Ian Concascia (170) all reached the final eight in the respective weight classes and will be wrestling for spots in the semifinals today at 9 a.m. The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., with the finals set for a 5:30 start.

    There are still 15 local wrestlers in the championship bracket, including three each from New London and Norwich Free Academy. Alejandro Paulino (126), Jorge Hidalgo (270) and Oscar Calcano (285) advanced for the Whalers while Matt Foster (113), Tony Hong (160) and Khaleed Exum-Strong (220) moved on for the Wildcats.

    Also advancing were Ledyard's Derek Schultz (113) and Daric Johnson (220), St. Bernard/Norwich Tech's Matt Dowler (113), Waterford's Sam Lindblom (138) and Fitch's Billy Goff (160). Dowler, the runner-up last year at 106, will meet NFA's Foster this morning in the quarterfinals.

    Newtown, the two-time Class LL champion, leads the team standings with 54 points with Danbury second (46.5) and New Milford third (43.5). Montville sits in eighth place with 28 points.

    Men's basketball

    • E.J. Crawford made three free throws with 2.7 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the scored and St. Thomas More went on to to a 99-97 overtime win over West Point Prep. The Chancellors (24-7) trailed by 28 points in the first half before rallying for the win. Crawford was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all three foul shots. Sterling Taplan led T-More with 24 points while Ryan Peterson had 17 points and seven rebounds, Sean Hoehn 13 points and 10 assists, Ian Gardner 13 points and eight rebounds and Steve Enoch 13 points and five rebounds.

    Boys' basketball

    • Top-seeded Hartford University bounced No. 8 Norwich Tech, 86-42, in the Constitution State Conference quarterfinals. University is 14-7. Mack Osias had 12 points for the Warriors (11-10).

    Men's hockey

    Trevor Gerling had a goal and an assist as UConn ended its regular season with a 4-0 Hockey East victory over UMass before 6,298 fans at the XL Center in Hartford.

    The Huskies (10-17-7, 7-11-4) will be either the ninth or 10th seed in the upcoming Hockey East tournament, playing a best-of-three series against and opponent to be determined.

    Goalie Rob Nichols stopp all 29 UMass shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season, all coming in Hartford.

    Cody Sharib, Patrick Kirkland and Shawn Pauly also scored goals for UConn.

    Women's basketball

    • Amanda Hawkesworth had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three steals as top-seeded Regis College routed No. 4 Mitchell College, 64-31, in the New England Collegiate Conference semifinals. Brittany Stone had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Regis (21-5). Jessica Shepherd scored 12 for the Mariners, who finish 13-13, while Amanda Garcia added eight points and seven rebounds.

    H.S. swimming

    • Dakota Williams won two individual events and was part of two winning relay teams at Fitch/Stonington put the finishing touches on a perfect regular-season in the Eastern Connecticut Conference by defeating Waterford 97-61 and New London 102-13.

    Williams won the 100-yard butterfly (56.21 seconds) and 100 breastroke (1:08.65) and was part of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams. Sean Estep (200 free), Alex Belair (50 free), John Moody (100 free), Matthew Planchon (500 free) and Sam Kokomoor (100 backstroke) also won individual events for the Falcons (11-1, 10-0). Jacob Hotsky won the 200 IM for Waterford (1-9, 1-9). New London finishes 0-11, 0-10.
