    Local college roundup: Coast Guard sister act dominates on opening day

    New London— Freshman sisters Gabrielle and Alexia Troise led the Coast Guard Academy women’s track team to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the season-opening Coast Guard Spring Invitational.

    Gabrielle was first in the shot put (37 feet, 8 inches) and Alexia second (35-1), while Alexia was second in the discus (114 feet, 9 inches) and Gabrielle fourth in the discus (103-1) and fifth in the hammer (126-6).

    Also winning events for the Bears were Monet Masters in the pole vault (10-11.75) and Beth Gollin in the 5,000 meters (18 minutes, 41.83 seconds). Taylor Ballek was third in the pole vault (10-6) and Alexandra Cobb second in the 400 hurdles (1:12.13).

    For Connecticut College, Bella Franz won the 1,500 in 4:55.31 and Aly Saperstein took the javelin with a throw of 117-9 to earn an invitation to the New England Division III championship. Emily Winter was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:13.28) to qualify for New Englands, as well, and Grace Sheeran was second in the 5,000 in 18:53.36.

    WPI won the meet with 150.5 points. Coast Guard finished with 90. Conn was fifth with 87.5.

    Men’s track & field

    • Ben Bosworth of Conn College won the 1,500 meters (4:07.34) and Pat Dermody the 5,000 (15:38.71) at the season-opening Coast Guard Spring Invitational.

    In the 400 hurdles, Aidan Cort qualified for the New England Division III championship with a personal-best time of 58.31 to finish third. Connor Trapp was third in the 1,500 (4:11.63).

    Coast Guard’s Ben Hannon was third in the 200 (23.11) and the 400 (52.37) to lead the Bears to a third-place finish at the meet. Matt Navetta was second in the pole vault (14-7.25), freshman Denis Daly was third in the triple jump (39 feet, 10 inches) and fifth in the pole vault (13-1.5) and the Bears’ 4x400 relay team of freshmen Raeford Penny, Luke Rehfuss, Cody Williamson and Tyler Templeton placed third (3:31.98).

    WPI won with 175 points. Coast Guard had 79.5. Conn was seventh with 53.

    Baseball

    • Vinny Siena was 3-for-4 and Blake Davey homered in UConn’s 5-1 loss to Tulane, evening the three-game series among the American Athletic Conference teams at one game each. The teams will play the third game today. Siena has a 16-game hitting streak for UConn (16-9, 1-1), which won the opener against Tulane 6-0 Friday night.

    • UConn Avery Point dropped a doubleheader to Monroe College, losing the opener 4-2 and the second game 9-7.

    The Pointers (8-7) made eight errors in the two games, leading to 10 unearned runs. Izzy Davila had five hits, Andrew Hinckley had three hits and drove in three runs, Nick Perrelli had three hits in the opener and Avery Santos had two hits in the second game for Avery Point.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • No. 11 Tufts came back from a three-goal deficit in the second half to force overtime and edge Conn College 11-10. Cecily Cushman scored three goals for Conn, which led 5-2 at halftime and 7-4 on a goal by Cushman with 16 minutes remaining in the game. Lindsey Walker scored four times for Tufts, including one with 4:18 to play that made the game 8-8.

    • Allie Bush finished with four goals and four assists to lead Wheaton past Coast Guard 19-1 in a NEWMAC game. Holly Moore had the only goal for the Bears (3-5, 0-2), giving her six for the season.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Quinn Hatchcock and Robert McKenna had two goals each for Coast Guard in a 14-6 loss to MIT in the Bears’ NEWMAC opener. Justin Huemme and Trent Moon added goals for Coast Guard (1-6, 0-1). Michael Traub had three goals and an assist for MIT (6-2, 1-0).

    • Will Ryan-Johnson, Tyler Desances, Dan DiGioia and Tyler Kradas scored goals for Mitchell in a 9-4 loss to Rivier in a game played at Stonington High School. Mitchell (3-3) led 2-0 before Rivier scored eight straight goals to put the game out of reach. Cody Lynch scored three goals for Rivier (7-2).

    • Kyle Howard Johnson broke the third tie of the game with 3:11 remaining to lift top-ranked Tufts to a 10-9 win at Conn College. Johnson had three goals and an assist for Tufts (8-0, 4-0 NESCAC). Briggs Barton scored two first-period goals and added an assist for Conn (2-7, 0-4) and Max King scored twice in the fourth quarter, when the Camels came from a 9-6 deficit to tie the game at 9-9. Conn was able to force two Tufts turnovers in the final minute of regulation and had one last shot at the buzzer that sailed just wide of the cage.
