    Local roundup: CGA advances to NEWMAC baseball semifinals

    Babson Park, Mass. - Sophomore lefty Colton Cannon pitched a complete game allowing just six singles and an earned run to lead fifth-seeded Coast Guard Academy to a 6-1 win over No. 4 Babson College on Friday in the quarterfinals of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference tournament.

    The Bears (16-12) advance to the best-of-three semifinals today against top-seeded MIT in Cambridge, Mass. The teams will play a doubleheader at noon and a third game, if necessary, will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.

    The day didn’t start great for the Bears, who forgot to bring their bat bag with them on the trip, but they finished with 13 hits with eight different players hitting safely in the win.

    Kyle Wood went 3-for-4 and Mark Behne finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Bears. Senior Dan Sabourin had two hits and an RBI while Blake Thompson and Tim Duncan each drove in a run and scored once. 

    In other games:

    • Carson Cross won his eighth game of the season and 20th of his career as UConn beat Memphis 10-1 in an American Athletic Conference game. Cross (8-2) allowed four hits over seven innings with six strikeouts, including the 200th of his career, and two walks. Joe DeRoche-Duffin was 3-for-4 with a double, homer and five RBI for UConn (28-15, 7-6).

    • Andrew Hinckley and Avery Santos belted home runs to power Avery Point past Holyoke Community College 16-1 in a game that ended after seven because of the mercy rule. Hinckley finished with two hits and four RBI while Santos had three RBI and Kyle Hart had two hits and three RBI for the Pointers (22-9). Chris Gonnelli (4-3) earned the win, allowing one run in five innings.

    H.S. softball

    • Caroline Taber pitched a three-hitter as No. 2 Fitch beat Woodstock Academy 10-0 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division game. Taber (6-0) struck out 13, had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs. Jackie Lewis tripled, homered and scored three runs and Jayden Delaporta was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI for Fitch (8-0).

    • Kazi Walker and Sarah Pacheco each had a single and triple as Waterford rolled to a 10-5 victory over Bacon Academy. Shea Spellman also had two hits for the Lancers (5-2) while Ally Pezzolesi drove in two runs.

    • Rhianna Maynard had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI in Stonington's 17-6 win over Barrington, R.I. Mallory Kane went 3-for-3, scored three runs and added an RBI and Erin Craig had two hits for the Bears (6-2), who broke the game open with a 10-run second inning.

    • Tabitha Ford's RBI single accounted for Grasso Tech's only run in a 17-1 loss to Windham Tech. The game lasted just four and a half innings. Samantha Martinez also had single for the Eagles (3-2).

    • Winning pitcher Madison Bodley struck out 10 in five innings and added two hits and two RBI, lifting Norwich Tech past Parish Hill, 14-3. Abbey Prater had three hits, including a two-run home run, and five RBI for the Warriors.

    Girls' lacrosse

    • Nancy Kuhn, Shannon Amarello and Flora Klise each had two goals and an assist to lead St. Bernard to an easy 14-4 nonleague win over Valley Regional. Kara Bassett also scored twice for the Saints (4-3) while Gracyce Mayeda added a goal and two assists and goalie Danielle Keefe made eight saves.

    Boys' golf

    • NFA picked up a pair of wins, beating Bacon Academy 5-2 and Waterford 4-3. Isaiah Joyner and Miles Joyner each carded a 46 and Jack Sullivan and Brendan Sullivan had 48s for NFA (3-4). Matt Shea (45), Brett Collins (46) and Stephen Lavoie (49) broke 50 for Waterford (2-2).

    • Wheeler's Tyler Primett took medalist honors with a 43 but the Lions lost to Tourtellotte in an ECC Small Division match, 5-2. Jake Umphlett shot a 49 for Wheeler (1-3, 0-3). 

    Women's water polo

    • Conn College opened play in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship with a 14-4 loss to Bucknell. Isabelle Baneux had two goals and two assists and Kelsey Millward scored her team-leading 69th goal of the season for Conn (18-14).
