    Local roundup: Mitchell clinches NECC baseball title with 10th straight win

    Bennington, Vt. — Mitchell College set a single-season record for wins (25) and clinched the New England Collegiate Conference regular-season baseball championship on Sunday with a 17-3 victory over Souithern Vermont.

    The Mariners (25-3, 14-1) swept the three-game weekend series and won their 10th straight game, scoring five runs in the first inning and cruising to an easy win.

    Evan Peck and Rafael Garcia had back-to-back two-run singles to jumpstart Mitchell in the first inning. Peck finished with two hits, a wal, two runs and three RBI while Tyler Pina added two hits and four RBI.

    Nate Narducci added a pinch hit two-run homer for the Mariners in the sixth.

    In another game:

    • Memphis won the rubber game of a three-game weekend American Athletic Conference road series at UConn by defeating the Huskies 3-1 in 15 innings. The Tigers are 29-13, 9-6 while UConn fell to 28-17, 7-8. The game was scoreless until the 10th when Memphis took a 1-0 lead only to watch the Huskies stay alive on a game-tying pinch hit single by Joe DeRoche-Duffin in the bottom of the inning. Memphis took the lead for good in the 15th on a two-run homer by Kane Barrow.

    Women's tennis

    • Connecticut College ended its season with a 7-2 win over Colby in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels (9-12, 2-6) won five of six singles matches with singles winners Charlotte Marcoux (No. 2) and Angelica Warren (No. 4) also teaming up for a win at doubles.

    Men's tennis

    • Conn College finished its season with an 8-1 loss to Colby in the NESCAC. The No. 2 doubles team of Jonathan Kraiger and Ben Sachs were the lone winners for the Camels (8-11, 1-7).

    College water polo

    • The Conn College women finished their season by placing 10th in the CWPA Championship at Princeton, losing their final match to Mercyhurst 9-6. Isabelle Baneux led the Camels, who finish 18-16, with three goals, one assists and four steals while Nicky Jasbon had one goal to finish her career as Conn's all-time leader with 222 goals.

    College sailing

    • Conn College finished ninth in the New England Women's Championship in Boston. Host Boston College won the event. Skipper Charlotte List and crew Alix Israel won the B division while Liz Dubovik, Emilia Clementi, Lea Bushnell and Alexandra Maurillo were 10th in the A division.

    Conn's coed team finished 16th in the Admiral's Cup at Kings Point, N.Y. Bryce Kopp and Tori Allen placed 10th in the A division while Hugh MacGilivray and Kim Bolick were 12th in the B division.

    College rowing

    • The Conn College men's varsity four placed second in a five-team field during a regatta on Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Conn finished in 7:03, five seconds behing Bowdoin. The Camels' novice four boat won in 7:33. The Conn women won both races, the varsity four finishing first in 8:03 and the novice four winning in 8:33.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Logan Morin had four goals and two assists to lead Norwich Free Academy to an 11-9 victory over Stonington on Saturday night. Kyle Ton added two goals and two assists for the Wildcats (4-2) while Jaedon Brown had two goals and one assist. Jack Riordan scored four goals for the Bears (4-3) and Dave Bibeau had one goal and one assist.

    • Hamden Hall defeated Williams School 9-8 on Saturday, despite two goals and three assists from Jack Fader. Xavier Mills added two goals and goalie Alex Medieros made nine saves.

    Road Racing

    • Todd Bennett of Norwich won the Flanders 5K in East Lyme. Bennett finished with a time of 17:15 and Kailey Bundy was the top women's finisher at 20:48, good for eighth place. Rounding out the top 10 were Chris Nuelle (17:43), Daniel Caron (19:36), Chris Kamperschroer of Ledyard (19:47), Ian Kamperschroer of Ledyard (19:49), William Finlayson (20:05), Shaun O'Dea of East Lyme (20:27), Jon Nelson of Niantic (21:32) and Bob Edgecomb of Waterford (21:34).

    • North Stonington's Mark Olivier won the Chikumbusu 10K Challenge in North Stonington on Saturday. He finished with a time of 36:24 and Valerie Sandin was the top women's finisher, placing sixth at 46:48. Also making the top 10 were Dave Roberts of Pawcatuck (45:21), Jim Roy of Mystic (45:50), Monty Volvoski of Norwich (46:35), Jeff Anderson of Mystic (46:37), Michael Crutchley of North Stonington (46:55), Tim Smith of Norwich (47:12), Paul Lapides of East Lyme (47:35) and Andrew Orum (48:21).

    • Brandon Mehlinger of Lisbon won the Team Joe Kelly 3.1-mile race in Lisbon on Saturday, with a time of 17:47. Tracy Corl of Norwich was the top women's finisher, coming in 12th with a time of 20:55). Also making the top 10 were Luke Shea (18:18), Brenden Sholes (18:54), Bruce Christensen (19:01), Alec Gomes of Norwich (19:28), Tanner Sulita of Norwich (19:41), John Minervino (20:12), Ben Izbicki of Mystic (20:14), Paul Baldini (20:43) and Christopher Ladyga of Lisbon (20:43).

    H.S. girls' lacrosse

    • Emily Kressley, Mia Marciano and Britta Widham scored three goals apiece to lead Williams to a 13-3 win over Wheeler on Saturday. The Blues are 5-1.
