    Local roundup: Old Lyme upsets No. 2 Shepaug Valley in girls' tennis

    Washington — Meredith Aird and Emily Brault posted straight-set singles wins to help 15th-seeded Old Lyme upset No. 2 Shepaug Valley 4-3 in the second round of the CIAC Class S girls' tennis touirnament on Monday.

    Aird won her No. 1 match over Caroline Kelly, 6-2, 6-4, while Brault beat Haley Pesce, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2.

    The Wildcats (14-7) received doubles wins from the No. 1 duo of Hannah O'Brien-Keelin Hurtt and No. 3 duo of Holly Fiscus-Noel Brown.

    Old Lyme advances to Tuesday's quarterfinals where it will play the winner of a morning second round match between No. 7 Old Saybrook and No. 10 Norwich Tech.

    In other matches:

    • Second-seeded Stonington swept past No. 18 RHAM 7-0 in the Class M second round at Mystic Indoor Sports Center. The Bears (15-0) didn't drop a set. Hannah Fabianski, Emily Gardiner, Taylor Startz and Charlotte Johnstone posted singles wins while the doubles duos of Mallory McArdle-Claire Morehouse, Gina Feliciano-Morgan Parrilla and Jen Carroll-Mckenzie Sadler also were victorious. Stonington hosts No. 26 Avon on Tuesday in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m.

    H.S. baseball

    • C.J. Leindecker pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking two, as No. 13 East Lyme defeated No. 20 Barlow 12-0 in the Class L first round. The Vikings scored two in the third inning and waited out a rain delay in the fifth before pulling away. Matt Abbey had a single, double, triple and two RBI while Owen Tretter had a single, triple and three RBI and Sam Gonski added three hits and three RBI. Miles Coe had two hits and two RBI for East Lyme (14-8). East Lyme plays in the second round on Wednesday against the winner of Tuesday's E.O. Smith-RHAM game.

    4 with two RBI, while Jordan Zeppieri had a single, two doubles and three RBI and Buddy Dewaine, Tom McDonald and Isaiah Mack had two hits apiece for the Indians (22-2). Montville plays the winner of Tuesday's game between Tolland and University/Classical on Wednesday.

    H.S. girls' lacrosse

    • Riley Dimmock scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left to rally fourth-seeded Waterford past No. 13 Haddam-Killingworth 11-10 in the Class S first round. Dimmock scored to tie the game with 1:32 remaining and then put the Lancers ahead with a shot off a free possession. The Lancers trailed 8-3 at halftime. Dimmock finished with four goals while Megan Sturm chipped in three goals and two assists while Mary Grace Wyatt and Leah Petrini had two goals apiece for the Lancers (15-4). Goalie Ivanna Hugo made seven saves. Waterford hosts No. 5 Granby at 5 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

    • Top-seeded Old Lyme beat No. 16 St. Bernard 18-9 in a Class S first round game. Maggier Berger led the Wildcats (17-2) with four goals and three assists while Sloane Sweitzer had four goals and four assists and Lauren Quaratella and Sydney Cowell each added three goals. Goalie Hannah Guenther had 11 saves for Old Lyme, which hosts No. 8 Weston on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Mia Londregan had three goals and Kara Bassett added two for the Saints (8-10).

    • No. 6 East Lyme advanced to the Class M quarterfinals with a 14-8 win over No. 11 Pomperaug in the first round. Belle Kenny chipped in five goals while Kendall Roberts had three goals and Steph deLaforcade added two goals for the Vikings (15-4). Vanessa Vurno had four assists and goalie Alex Rose made 10 saves for East Lyme, which visits No. 3 Barlow on Thursday.

    • Maggie Tilton and Carina Mitchell scored No. 15 Ledyard's only goals in a 17-2 loss to No. 2 Hand in the Class M first round. Ellie Phetteplace had an assist and goalie Gretchen Montgomery made 14 saves for the Colonels (10-8-1).

    • Lauren Cenci had seven goals and an assist as No. 11 Northwest Catholic knocked off No. 6 and defending state champion Stonington 11-9 in the Class S first round. Margot Calmar had three goals and Hannah Johnson and Margit Burgess each scored twice for Stonington (12-6).

    H.S. softball

    • No. 12 East Lyme outlasted a one-hour rain delay and No. 21 Ledyard for an 11-7 win in the Class L first round. The Vikings (15-7) fell behind 5-0 in the first inning before rallying, taking the lead for good with six runs in the fourth. Kaylie Crosby had two doubles and Alex Marsh's two-run double put the Vikings ahead for good while Mikaela LoPriore was the winning pitcher. East Lyme will play on Wednesday against the winner of today's game between No. 5 Torrington and No. 28 Bunnell. Olivia Satti had two doubles, Madison Sanborn had a two-run single and Jessica Kuelling finished with three hits for the Colonels (10-11).

    H.S. track & field

    • The Class L (Middletown) and Class S (Willow Brook Park, New Britain) state meets were suspended by rain and will be resumed at a date and time to be announced by CIAC officials.  

    College sailing

    • The Coast Guard Academy coed sailing team is in seventh place out of 18 competitors after the first of two Eastern semifinal regattas in the college national championships in Newport. The top nine in each of the Eastern and Western divisions qualify for the finals. The Bears have 113 points, trailing Tufts (101), Fordham (95), U.S. Naval Academy (94), Georgetown (89), College of Charleston (82) and Boston College (76). Yale is second behind Stanford in the Western division. Sailing continues today.
