    Local roundup: NFA's Johnson second in the 100 at New England meet

    Saco, Maine — Norwich Free Academy's Jawaun Johnson finished second in the 100-meter dash at the 70th New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Thornton Academy.

    Johnson, a sophomore, crossed the finish line in 10.85 seconds, trailing only Abu Ceesay of Norton, Mass., who won the race in 10.61. Johnson was the Class LL champion in the 100 and 200 races, but placed only sixth in the 100 at the State Open on Monday.

    Johnson's runnerup finish was the best among the local competitors who competed Saturday.

    East Lyme's Greg Atkinson placed seventh in the 300 hurdles (39.37) as did Ledyard's Michael Lopes in the long jump (21 feet, 10.25 inches), while East Lyme's Josh Leffingwell was 11th in the pole vault (13-9) and Old Lyme's Jared Stanland placed 16th in the discus (139-0).

    In the girls' competition, NFA's Olivia Lane placed ninth in the discus (116-0) while teammate Kelsie Hall tied for ninth in the pole vault (10-3).

    Schooners win again

    • The Mystic Schooners won their sixth straight game, beating the Plymouth Pilgrims 6-4 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School. Ben Ruta (Wagner) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scores and Groton's Aaron Hill (UConn) and Lou Iannotti (Quinnipiac) had two hits each for Mystic (6-1). Jason Foley (Sacred Heart) was the winner in relief and Teddy Turner (Trinity) earned his second save of the season. 

    Zone VI Senior Legion

    • Jewett City swept Waterford in a doubleheader, winning the opener 2-0 and the second game 1-0. Nic Vlaun (first game, nine strikeouts) and Jesus Garcia (second) pitched two-hitters for Jewett City.

    • Ledyard-Pawcatuck beat Tri-Town 11-8 in 10 innings. Kevin Knowles had three hits and four RBI and Troy Stefanski got the win with two scoreless innings of relief for Ledyard-Pawcatuck.
