Waterford wins District 6 Babe Ruth 15 title

Stonington — Waterford unleashed its offense, and its ace, on Sunday night.

The result was a 14-0 win over Groton in the championship game of the District 6 Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament.

Waterford, which hosts the state tournament, opens play Friday against Trumbull at 5:30 p.m. The game ended after five innings on a mercy rule. Groton also advances to the state tournament as the District 6 champion, since Waterford had already qualified as the host. It's a nine-team, double-elimination format.

Colin Bakken pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for the win and was backed by a 12-hit attack. Groton beat Waterford 4-2 last Friday, setting up Sunday's title game.

"The kids were a lot looser tonight,'' said Waterford coach Joe Mariani. "We had a good day of batting practice on Saturday. I don't know if they were tense (Friday) because it was a championship game. They responded very well tonight.''

Waterford scored twice in the first inning and put the game away with an eight-run second inning. Bakken tripled home a run and Matt Driscoll's groundout accounted for the first-inning runs.

Jason Page led off the second with a home run to deep left-centerfield. Walker Sutman added a two-run single, followed to two bases-loaded walks, a two-run double by Eddie Aledia and Page's sacrifice fly. Jake Huff, Walker Sutman, Glen Faber, Bakken, Driscoll, Aledia and Page drove in two runs each and Chris Persi, Sutman, Bakken and Faber had two hits each for Waterford. With Bakken and Sutman leading the rotation, Mariani is confident in his team.

"We're going to compete to win the thing,'' said Mariani.

Having already qualified for the tournament wasn't an issue, said Mariani.

"In Waterford, no. Because under Bob Bono's regime (former Waterford Babe Ruth president) we are expected to win the district tournament. If we did not win tonight it would have been a huge disappointment for us. The kids know that.''

Kyle Egan and Jordan Lowell had the hits for Groton.
