    Local roundup: Rios lifts Schooners to easy NECBL win

    Sanford, Maine. — Former St. Bernard School great Willie Rios pitched six solid innings as the Mystic Schooners rolled to an 11-2 victory over the Sanford Mainers in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game Wednesday night.

    Rios, who attended Maryland, scattered six hits, allowed only one earned run and struck out five to lower his earned run average to 1.80. Stonington's Doug Domnarski (UConn Avery Point) pitched a scoreless eighth for the Schooners, striking out two.

    Dan Hoy (Princeton) hit his fourth home run of the year for Mystic (19-12) while Richard Slenker (Yale) went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs.

    District 10 LL softball (9-10)

    • Anna Donahue had three hits and an RBI and Maddie Burrows had two hits and an RBI for Waterford in a 2-0 victory over Ledyard to tie the best-of-three series at one game each. The final game will be played at 5:30 p.m. today at Waterford. Emma Marelli added a double for Waterford, Burrows pitched five strong innings for the win and Milena Walker pitched the sixth inning to earn the save. Samantha Money had the only hit for Ledyard and pitched a complete game, striking out 14. 

    State LL softball (10-11)

    • Monroe defeated Waterford 7-3 in the opening round of the Connecticut Little League (10-11) tournament in Berlin. Isabella Williams had two hits and pitcher Gaby Kramer allowed only two hits for Waterford, which will play Darien in a losers' bracket game of the double-elimination format on Friday.

    SEC Babe Ruth (16-18)

    • Tri-County rallied from a 7-0 deficit to tie Waterford 8-8 in a game called due to darkness after eight innings. Anthony Jordan had two hits and scored two runs for Waterford (5-1-1) while Griffin Beaney drove in two runs. Tri-County is 5-2-1.

    Zone VI Legion baseball

    • New London split a Tuesday night doubleheader against Willimantic at Sal Amanti Field, winning the opener 5-1 before losing the second game 3-2 in eight innings. Justin Marceau had a three-run double and scored twice for New London (18-8) in the opener, while Gabriel Cortorreal and Brett Perry had three hits apiece and Hunter Nadeau went the distance for the win, striking out seven. Marceau also had two hits in the second game for New London.

    State Babe Ruth (14)

    • East Lyme finished pool play at 2-1 with a 7-1 win over previously unbeaten North Haven on Tuesday night at Southbury. East Lyme will clinch the No. 1 seed and play Waterford in the semifinals (Saturday at 3 p.m.) if Trumbull loses its final pool game Thursday against Shelton (that game was rained out Wednesday). Trumbull can finish 2-1 with a win and force a three-way tie, meaning run differential will determine which two teams advance.

    Against North Haven, Jake Schelkly and Eddie Kaftan combined to pitch a two-hitter while Liam Holloway had three hits, Kaftan and Schelkly each had two hits and Tom Mason added a two-run double.

    District 10 LL baseball (11-12)

    • East Lyme advanced to the District 10 Little League (11-12) championship series with a 12-3 semifinal victory over Montville on Tuesday night. East Lyme will play host to Waterford in a best-of-three series for the district title beginning Thursday. Dan Allard pitched five innings to earn the win while Owen Robbins was 4-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored and a solo home run. In addition, Nolan Connolly had two hits, including a two-run homer, Carter Chambers had two hits, including an RBI double and Allard doubled, drove in a run and scored twice. Zak Keenan had two hits and drove in a run for Montville.

    National Lacrosse League

    • Tracey Kelusky, an assistant coach for the New England Black Wolves, is a finalist for the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame Class of 2015. Kelusky played 14 seasons in the league with five teams, leading Calgary to a pair of Champion's Cups in 2004 and 2009. He retired with the 11th-most goals (383) and points (823) in league history and 13th-most games played (195) along with 886 loose balls. He was the 2001 NLL Rookie of the Year, winner of the 2007 Sportsmanship Award and a five-time All-Pro (2001-2005).

    UConn football

    • UConn junior offensive lineman Andreas Knapp has been named to the 2015 Watch List for the Wuerffel Trophy and has been nominated for the 2015 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The Good Works Team recognizes players from across the country who exemplify a superior commitment to community service and volunteerism.

    Knappe, a native of Denmark, is a two-time member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic team. He has also participated regularly in community service efforts, including visits with middle school students in East Hartford and a school reading program in Coventry, volunteering at the KJLife Flag Football Tournament in Glastonbury, and running youth football clinics when he returns home to Denmark.
