    Pawcatuck-Westerly advances to Junior softball New England championship series

    Orange — Pawcatuck-Westerly remained alive in the East Regional Junior League 13-14-year-old softball tournament Tuesday morning with an 11-1 elimination round victory over Fairfield.

    The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

    Pawcatuck-Westerly advanced to Wednesday's New England Championship round where it must beat Charlton-Dudley (Mass.) twice (11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.) in order to play the Mid-Atlantic champion in Thursday's East Regional final.

    Charlton-Dudley defeated Pawcatuck-Westerly 4-1 on Sunday.

    Trinity Lennon was the winning pitcher on Tuesday, scattering hits over five innings without allowing an earned run and walking only two. Lennon also hit a two-run home run in the fifth ending that ended the game.

    Briana Beverly led Pawcatuck-Westerly's balanced offense attackwith a single, two doubles and three RBI while Alex Mitchell had two doubles and one RBI, Colette Dreher had a single, double and one RBI, Abby Flakus had two hits and one RBI and Erin Craig had two hits.

    East Regional LL (11-12) softball

    • District 10 and Connecticut champion Waterford's season came to an end with a 3-2 loss to North Bellmore-North Merrick (N.Y.) in an elimination game at Bristol. The New York state champions broke a 2-2 tie in the final inning on an RBI double by Sydney LaMagra.

    Waterford overcame an early 2-0 deficit by scoring a run in the third when Anna Kovacs singles home Jenna Gannon and tying the game in the fifth on Gina McKittrick's infield out.

    Rachel Miller pitched well in defeat for Waterford, scattering six hits and walking just one.

    Schooners keep rolling

    John Brucker (Marist) went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs as the Mystic Schooners set a franchise record for victories in a season (25) with a 9-2 win over the Ocean State Waves in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch. The Schooners (25-15) also clinched the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division for the upcoming playoffs. Louis Iannotti (Quinnipiac) added three hits and three RBI for Mystic, which broke open the game with a five-run fifth.

    H.S. football

    • New London completed its 2015 schedule by agreeing to game against Foran on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in Milford. Foran, like New London a Class M school, is a member of the Southern Connecticut Conference (Division II) and went 6-5 in 2014.

    The Whalers lost their 10th game, a home game against Stamford, back in the spring when the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference revised its schedule, forcing Stamford cancel its game against New London.

    SEC Babe Ruth (16-18)

    • Griffin Beaney hit a tw-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Waterford over Tri-County 3-2. Cody Cleary and Tyler Howser pitched for Waterford, allowing just three hits and no earned runs. Howser added an RBI single to score Waterford's first run. Lucas Bazzaro pitched a complete game for Tri-County, scattering six hits, all singles.

    State Senior Legion tournament

    • New London's season came to an end on Monday night with an 8-1 loss to Simsbury in an elimination game in the Connecticut American Legion tournament's Northern Division bracket at Rotary Field in South Windsor. New London, the Zone VI champion, finished 21-11.
