Mystic Schooners advance to their first NECBL championship series

Groton — Dan Hoy received the water jug bath treatment from his Mystic Schooner teammates on Friday night.

There wasn't enough water to go around to douse all the deserving members of the New England Collegiate Baseball League Southern Division championship team.

Mystic completed an impressive sweep of defending NECBL champion Newport, rolling to a 16-2 victory at Fitch High School. The Schooners advanced to the league's championship series for the first time in franchise history.

"We're so excited to be here on this stage," said Hoy, who went 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI. "To finally make it to the championship series, that's been the goal all year. We're not done yet."

Mystic hosts the winner of today's Northern Division championship series finale between Vermont and North Adams (Mass.) in the opening game on Sunday night in Groton.

"(Pitching coach) Dennis (Long) and I were here when we were 9-23 (four years ago)," manager Phil Orbe said. "So we certainly appreciate what's going on right now."

Forgive the Schooners for draining the drama out of Friday's game. Their bats remained sizzling hot, as they pounded out 18 hits and scored in every inning but one. The league's best pitching staff also has helped Mystic sweep both its postseason series so far.

"Hot teams win championships and we're definitely very hot," Hoy said. "We're a good team that's very hot right now and we're playing good baseball. There's no stopping us if we keep playing the way we're playing right now."

Newport, the league's top hitting team, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of starter Jesse Lepore (Miami). Drew Lugbauer (Michigan) belted a two-run double.

    The lead didn't last long.

Ben Ruta reached on a one-out walk and then Hoy drove a Derik Beauprez pitch well over the left-field fence to tie the score. Hoy, who attends Princeton, called it the longest home run of his career.

The Schooners seized the lead for good with two runs in the second. Jesse Berardi led off with a single, Aaron Hill walked and John Brucker's single made it 3-2. Richard Slenker hustled his way to an infield hit to plate the next run

The Mystic hit parade kept rolling from there.

Ruta reached bases five times on two walks, two singles and a double and knocked in two runs. Brucker finished with three hits and two RBI while Derek Jenkins had two hits, an RBI and scored three runs and Nick Mascelli belted a two-run home run.

"Our guys are keeping to what hitting coach Scott Wosleger has been preaching to them," Orbe said.

Lepore earned the win, allowing six hits and two runs in six innings. Relievers Tre Gonzalez, a Montville High School graduate and current Eastern Connecticut State University pitcher, and Frank Trimarco combined for three shutout innings.

The Schooners now have a day to prepare for their championship series. They always show up ready to play.

"It's very impressive how they're going about their business," Orbe said. "They're very loose. The guys, one through 26 on the roster, are playing in the moment. That itself is something that's very difficult for young people, ages 19 to 21, to understand. They're really doing a great job with it."
