Waterford LL, Mystic Schooners will try again on Wednesday

An all-day soaking rain on Tuesday washed out games involving three local summer baseball teams.

Waterford's winners' bracket game against Bedford (N.H.) at the Little League Baseball New England Regional in Bristol was pushed back to 4 p.m. Wednesday, while the deciding game for the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship series between the Mystic Schooners and Vermont Mountaineers was also postponed until 6:05 p.m. Wednesday at Fitch High School.

The Connecticut Tigers, meanwhile, had their New York-Penn League game against the Auburn Doubledays rained out and it will not be rescheduled.

Should Waterford win its second straight game in the Little League tournament, it would advance to Thursday's winners' bracket final at 7 p.m. If the Connecticut champions lose, they would be forced to play Biddeford (Maine) in a losers' bracket game at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Waterford is attempting to become the first team in District 10 history to qualify for the Little League World Series later this month in Williamsport, Pa.

Woodruff in contention at Ensign Nationals

    • Gary Woodruff of Niantic Bay Yacht Club, sailing Tailgunner, was in second place after the first day of racing Monday in the 54th Ensign National Championship Regatta being contested at Niantic Bay.

Woodruff finished the day’s three races with 10 points, the same point total as the first-place boat, Menekaune, sailed by Mike Derusha of the Michigan-based Ensign fleet 12. Derusha finished first in the third race of the day, breaking the tie.

Robin Durschmitt, also of Niantic Bay, won the first race of the regatta in Magic and Rick Conley of fleets 34 (Stonington) and 73 (Niantic) won the second race in Friendly Spirit.

Tuesday’s racing was canceled due to inclement weather.

The series will continue Wednesday and Thursday.

Rounding out the top five after Monday were Thom Healey in Marista (Fleet 63, Toms River, N.J.), third with 15 points; Peter Heffernan in Never-Enz (Fleet 7, Huntington, N.Y.), fourth with 17 points; and Bill Murphey in Chowder (Fleet 63), fifth with 27.
