    Local roundup: Staten Island routs Tigers 10-2

    Norwich — Shortstop Danienger Perez, making his New York-Penn League debut, went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI as the Staten Island Yankees routed the Connecticut Tigers 10-2 on Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.

    The Yankees (35-32) already led 4-0 when they broke the game open with a five-run third, highlighted by a two-run triple by Perez. Jake Hernandez and Drew Bridges added RBI singles during the outburst that made a loser of Connecticut starter Chase Edwards (6-6).

    Reliever Jordan Smith was a bright spot for the Tigers (31-33), scattering two hits during 4.3 shutout innings. Connecticut's runs came courtesy of a two-run homer by Shane Zeile in the seventh, his sixth of the season.

    The teams will play again on Monday night at Staten Island at 7 p.m.

    Late Speedbowl

    • Diego Monahan won his second SK Modified feature of the season during the New London-Waterford Speedbowl's six division race card on Saturday night. Other division winners were Corey Coates (Limited Sportsman), Corey Barry (SK Light), Dana DiMatteo (Legends), Larry Loomis (Mini Stock) and Montville's Josh Galvin (North East Streek Stock).

    Monahan battled veteran Ted Christopher over the final four laps behind holding off Christopher for the SK Modified win and retaining is overall points lead. Keith Rocco finished third. Coates survived three restarts and a challenge from his father, Allen Coates, in the Limited Sportsman feature while Galvin cruised to a win in the North East Street Stock Tour feature (former Speedbowl champion Moose Douton finished second), DiMatteo dominated the Legends race, Barry led the final 19 laps in the SK Light race and Loommis withstood four cautions to finish ahead of Ray Christian III in the Mini Stock event.

    Next up at the Speedbowl is the season finale for the Thursday Night Thunder series. Nickolas Hovey has already clinched the Bandolero division title, but Super X, Legendr and X-Car points championships are all on the line.
