    Local roundup: Gerton, Fornaro lead Bears to victory

    Ithaca, N.Y. — Sophomore Gill Gerton had career highs with 19 points and 14 rebounds as the Coast Guard women's basketball team beat Dickinson 66-44 at the Ithaca Invitational on Friday.

    Coast Guard, which outscored Dickinson 20-4 in the fourth quarter, plays host Ithaca in the championship game today at 3 p.m.

    Megan Fornaro had 20 points, Torie Sutherland scored 11 and Jill Bray had 10 points for Coast Guard (2-1).

    In other games:

    • Liz Malman scored a game-high 18 points, leading Connecticut College to an 85-34 win over Clark in its opener. Mairead Hynes had 12 rebounds, Payton Ouimette scored 12 and Kylie Caouette had 11 points for Conn. 

    Men's basketball

    • Christian Vital had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead St. Thomas More to an 89-79 win over previously unbeaten IMG Academy (Fla.) at the National Prep Showcase in New Haven. Omari Spellan added 18 points and six rebounds for the Chancellors (2-0) while Charlie Brown had 15 points and four rebounds and Julian Batts finished with seven points, six rebounds and six assists. IMG is 12-1.

    • Jayson Hughes scored 27 points, including five 3-pointers, as FDU-Florham defeated Conn College 83-73 in the opening round of Conn's Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament. Zuri Pavlin had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Camels, who were playing their season-opener, while Bo McKinely finished with 13 points, Lee Messier 11 and Daniel Janel 10. 

    Women's soccer

    • Rachel Hill scored a pair of second half goals to lead UConn to a 2-0 victory over Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament at Piscataway, N.J. The Huskies (19-3) will play host Rutgers, a 2-0 winner over Hofstra, in the third round on Sunday at 1 p.m.

    Hill scored in the 59th minute to make it 1-0, taking a rebound off a shot by Liana Hinds and blasting it into the net. Her second goal came in the 82nd minute when she converted a pass from Andrea Plucenik. Notre Dame finishes 14-5-1.

    College field hockey

    • Top-seeded Syracuse scored a pair of early goals and went on to defeat two-time defending champion UConn 3-1 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Orange (20-1) avenged a loss to UConn (22-1) and last year's final and snapped the Huskies' 38-game winning streak.

    Syracuse will play North Carolina, a 2-0 winner over Duke, in Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m. Alma Fenne scored two goals for the Orange, including an insurance goal with 9:58 remaining. The Huskies' goal came on a penalty stroke by Casey Umstead with 3:35 left in the first half.

    H.S. football

    • Ticket sales for the Thanksgiving Day football game between Ledyard and Fitch will begin on Monday. Tickets wil be on sale at the Ledyard High main office on Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. and Wednesday from 7-9 a.m. Tickets will be on sale at the Fitch High main office on Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 8-11 a.m. Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. All tickets will be $8 on Thanksgiving Day.
