    Local roundup: Waterford's Gathy wins state Scholar-Athlete award in swimming

    Southington — Waterford's Meika Gathy, a Class S all-state performer, was named the Connecticut Scholar-Athlete recipient in swimming during the Connecticut High School Coaches' Association all-state banquet on Tuesday night.

    Gathy, senior, was also an All-Eastern Connecticut Conference performer for the Lancers.

    Men's basketball

    • Daniel Janel scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds, leading Connecticut College to a 64-60 win over Clark in a nonleague game. Lee Messier scored 13 points and Tyler Rowe had nine points, five assists and two steals for Conn (2-2). John Pisacreta and Brendan Kittredge had 14 points each for Clark (1-5).

    • UConn-Avery Point's Will Orr had 25 points and 11 rebounds, but the Pointers lost 72-61 to Springfield Tech. Aaron Lorenzo scored 15 points and Ibo Rivera had 15 rebounds for Avery Point (1-8).

    Women's basketball

    • Falecia Cabral and Jess Korzec scored 19 points each as UConn-Avery Point beat Post University's junior varsity team, 74-68. East Lyme's Carynn Bartolucci had 17 points, Korzec had 11 rebounds and Cabral had 10 rebounds for Avery Point.

    • Regis outscored Mitchell College 22-9 in the fourth quarter, pulling away for a 73-43 win in the nonleague game. Kate McCormack and Diamond Thomas had nine points each for Mitchell (1-1).

    NESCAC honors

    • Six Connecticut College players were named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference all-sportsmanship teams. Honored were Aly Cheney (volleyball), Ajami Gikandi (men's soccer), Dan Gossels (men's cross country), Anna Guay (women's cross country), Amanda Proulx (women's soccer) and Ryley van der Velde (field hockey).
