    Local roundup: Hynes lifts No. 24 Conn women past Bates

    Lewiston, Me. — Mairead Hynes scored 11 points and had 15 rebounds as Connecticut College beat Bates on Friday, 70-53, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game.

    Payton Ouimette (17 points, five assists), Kylie Caouette (13 points, five assists) and Willa McKinley (12 points) also scored in double figures for Conn (14-2, 4-1), ranked 24th in the USA Today coaches' poll. Liz Malman added five assists and four steals.

    Bernadette Connors had 17 points and eight rebounds for Bates (5-11, 1-4).

    Men's basketball

    • Julian Batts made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give St. Thomas More a 73-72 win over Bridgton at the Bridgton Winter Classic. Omari Spellman had 23 points and six rebounds for T-More and Christian Vital had 16 points and four rebounds. The Chancellors won't play in Saturday's championship game due to inclement weather.

    • Mitchell College lost to Wheelock in a New England Collegiate Conference game on Thursday night, 89-76. Parris Hill had 28 points and nine rebounds, Domenico Santiago had 17 points and 15 rebounds and Donavan McClean scored 14 for Mitchell (4-8, 3-3).

    Women's hockey

    • Natalie Bernstein had two goals and Emily Kreuger added three assists as Williams edged Conn College, 5-4, in the NESCAC. Abby Brustad had a goal and an assist for Williams (9-5, 5-3). Lily Connolly had a goal and an assist, Michaela Igo had two assists, and Paige Michel, Stephanie Izzi, and Julie Beattie all scored for the Camels (7-5-1, 4-3-1).

    Men's hockey

    • Conn College lost to Wesleyan in a NESCAC game, 5-2. Tim DiPretoro had a goal and an assist, Jon Paris scored and Joe Birmingham and Joe Giordano had assists for Conn (3-10-2, 0-7-2). 

    H.S. wrestling

    • Collin Crader (160 pounds) won both his matches by pin as Ledyard beat ninth-ranked Ellis Tech (39-24) and E.O. Smith (61-12) in Danielson. Austin Robertson (113), Christian Fogg (132), Dakota Grover (182), Danny Contino (195), Daric Johnson (220) and heavyweight Shawn Hundley all won twice for the Colonels (17-2).

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Old Lyme picked up a pair of wins, beating East Lyme/Waterford/Montville 128.95-128 and Norwich Free Academy 128.95-118.95. Britney Detuzzi of Old Lyme and Morgan Staehle of East Lyme/Waterford/Montville shared all-around honors with 33.7 points. Detuzzi won the floor exercise (8.7) and Staehle won the uneven bars (8.55) and balance beam (8.35). Elizabeth Heikkinen of East Lyme/Waterford/Montville won the vault (8.9). 

    H.S. boys' swimming

    • Eric Gu won an event and was on two winning relay teams, leading East Lyme to Eastern Connecticut Conference wins over NFA (95-66) and New London (101-23). John Durham, Eain Goolsbey, Gary Zhang, Wyatt Smith, Jack Zhang and Nathan am Ende also won events for East Lyme (4-3, 4-0). Brady Friese and Kevin Sikorski won events for NFA (2-3, 2-3), which beat New London (0-4, 0-4) 126-26.
