Local roundup: Stricklen signs new deal with Sun

Mohegan — Connecticut Sun reserve guard Shekinna Stricklen signed a new two-year contract with the team, the Sun announced Friday.

Per team policy, terms were not released.

“Shekinna is a talented guard that is a proven three-point threat in the WNBA,” first-year Sun coach Curt Miller said. “She fits into our offensive system and will help space the floor for our skilled post game. We are excited to have her back with the Sun and I look forward to working with her on the court.”

Stricklen, 6-foot-2, was originally drafted second overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. She was acquired last offseason in a trade with Seattle and was a candidate for the 2015 WNBA Sixth Player of the Year honor. She averaged 17.6 minutes and 7.7 points and played in all 34 regular season games. She also connected on 35.9-percent of her 3-pointers, tying Minnesota’s Maya Moore for 15th in the league, and made a team-high 51.
