    Local roundup: Saints top Warriors in boys' basketball

    Norwich — John Vogt had 14 points and Sam Vogt and Juan Uran 13 each Monday for the St. Bernard School boys' basketball team in a 64-42 victory over Norwich Tech.

    Jared Neal and Jacob Sulik each had 12 points for Norwich Tech and Owen Duff had seven.

    St. Bernard is 10-9 overall.

    In other games:

    • Old Lyme scored 55 points in the first half and cruised to an 81-42 victory over Portland in the Shoreline Conference. Drake Gavin led the Wildcats (14-5) with 25 points, including three 3-pointers, while George Doll scored 19 points and Dean Palenski added 12.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Old Lyme finished its regular season by winning a tri-match. The Wildcats scored 129.2 points to edge East Lyme/Waterford/Montville (129.10) and Stonington (123.50). Old Lyme and the East Lyme co-op have already qualified for Saturday's CIAC class meets at Pomperaug.

    Old Lyme's Britney Detuzzi won the all-around with 35.65 points and either won or shared all four individual events — vault (9.1), bars (8.6), beam (8.75) and floor (9.2). East Lyme's Maranda Ealahan shared first in the vault (9.1) and was fourth in the all-around (32.27), while Montville's Morgan Staehle was second (34.0) and Waterford's Elisabeth Heikkinen was third (33.10). In addition, Old Lyme's Mary Bolles was second on bars (8.4) and third on floor (8.4), Old Lyme's Caroline Montanaro tied for third on vault (8.5) and Stonington's Cat Cassata was third on bars (7.8). 

    H.S. cheerleading

    • Montville won its second straight Medium Division title during the Eastern Connecticut Conference cheerleading championships on Saturday at Waterford High School. The Indians, coached by Theresa Quibble, finished with 156.6 points, the highest total of the day, for their eighth title in program history. In addition, East Lyme won the Large Division title with 150.4 points and Griswold was crowned the Small Division champion with 128.3 points. East Lyme, coached by Stephanie Jenkins, was also the recipient of the annual Colby Sousa Team Spirit Award.

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard Academy freshman Dan Moreno broke a 21-year-old school record in the 200-yard breaststroke Sunday and helped the Bears finish third in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference championship meet at MIT. Moreno swam a 2:03.63 in the preliminaries, breaking the record of 2:05.46 set by Rich Howes in 1995. He then came back in the final to break his own record in 2:03.17 to finish second and earn All-NEWMAC honors. In addition, Taylor Rowe earned his second All-NEWMAC honor with second in the 1,650 freestyle (15:48.11), while teammate Mike Franco finished fourth (16:27.49). The Bears also finished third in the 400 free relay (3:06.78) with the team of Elliot Vanderen, Moreno, Patrick Jackson and Ben Morseth. Ross Garrett added a sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:54.60).

    • Connecticut College finished third for the fourth straight season in the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship meet at Williams. Williams won the meet with 1,789.5 points while Conn had 1,407 points, just 3.5 points behind runner-up Tufts. The Camels had All-NESCAC performances in three events, with Stephen Staperdas placing second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:06.17), George Tilneac placing second in the 200 buttefly (1:50.06) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Niko Brosnihan, Tilneac, Dylan Steiner and Mike Fothergill placing third in 3:03.79. In addition, A.J. Pite was sixth in the 200 fly (1:52.69) and Matt Delaporte was sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.35).

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard freshman Samantha Kenis broke the 200-yard backstroke school record twice on the final day of the NEWMAC championship meet at MIT, lifting the Bears to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. Kenis swam her preliminary in 2:08.63, breaking the record of 2:11.69 set by Kim Shadwick in 2011, then placed fourth in the final in 2:07.96. Coast Guard also had a fifth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with the team of Kristen Young, Patti Eidenire, Addy Rutkoske and Christine McCulla finishing in 3:32.79.
