    Local roundup: UConn baseball wins again at AAC tourney

    Clearwater, Fla. — The UConn baseball team ran its winning streak to 11 with a 9-1 win over No. 7 South Florida in the American Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday.

    Third-seeded UConn (35-22) is one of two unbeaten teams in the double-elimination tournament and advances to Saturday's play, where is will face the winner of Friday's losers' bracket game between South Florida and Memphis at 1 p.m.

    Joe DeRoche-Duffin was 4-for-6 with two doubles, Bryan Daniello was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, Bobby Melley was 3-forf-4 and former Fitch High School standout Aaron Hill had two hits for UConn. Tim Cate (4-1) was the winner, allowing four hits over 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.

    College track

    • Bella Franz of Connecticut College advanced to the 1500 meter finals in the NCAA Division III Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Franz, a junior, had a time of 4:34.49 to finish fifth in her heat and eighth in the field of 22 that will compete for the title on Saturday.

    H.S. girls' tennis

    • Old Lyme's Marissa Smith and Shnanon Nosal advanced to the Shoreline Conference tournament doubles' final, but lost to Nikki Woznyk and Jess Coughlin of Coginchaug 6-3, 7-5. Smith and Nosal beat Valley Regional's Ellie Flynn and Maddie Ball in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1.

    Casey Burns of Westbrook won the No. 1-2 singles title and Old Saybrook's Erin Stangel won the No. 3-4 singles title. Smith and Nosal were selected to the Shoreline Conference all-star team as first-team selections and teammate Emily Brault was a second team pick. 

    H.S. boys' golf

    • Graham Aird and Mason Swaney of Old Lyme were named to the Shoreline Conference all-star team as first-team selections. Matt McCarthy and Peter Macadam were named to the second team for Old Lyme, which finished third in the Shoreline Conference tournament with a score of 340. 

    College softball

    • Coast Guard freshman Hayden Short was been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) New England All-Region third team. Short led the Bears with a .437 batting average, 17 doubles, seven homers and 38 RBIs. She was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year honors as well as a spot on the All-conference second team.

    NLL honors

    • ILIndoor.com, a national lacrosse publication, named New England's Glenn Clark the National Lacrosse League Coach of the Year and Rich Lisk its General Manager of the Year. Clark guided the Black Wolves to 10 regular-season victories in his first season, matching the franchise record, a a spot in the East Division finals. Lisk, meanwhile, helped turn a 4-14 team of 2015 into a 10-8 contender in 2016. Two key moves included trades for 2015 NLL MVP Shawn Evans and former No. 1 NLL Entry Draft pick Kevin Crowley, who was re-acquired from the Toronto Rock.
