Local roundup: Schooners rally late to beat Vermont 6-4

Groton — The Mystic Schooners took advantage of shoddy defense to score three runs in the eighth inning and turn a one-run deficit into a 6-4 win over the Vermont Mountaineers in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Thursday night at Fitch High School.

Trailing 4-3 against new reliever Joe Rocchietti, Taishi Terashima (St. Bonaventure) led off with a walk and went to third on a single from Brett Bond (Missouri). One out later, Terashima scored on a passed ball to tie the game and Bond advanced to second. Martin Figuroa (Rhode Island) followed with a base hit to score Bond with the go-ahead run and took second on the throw home.

Rocchietti uncorked a wild pitch to move Figuroa to third, and pinch hitter Richard Slenker (Yale) singled to score Figuroa with the third run of the inning.

Bond and Figuroa (two RBI) each went 2-for-4, and Terashima scored two runs.

Ryan Thomas (Marist) struck out two in the ninth to earn the save. Matt Ardente (Seton Hall) allowed two hits and no runs over two innings of relief for the win.
