    Local roundup: Schooners beat Bay Sox for fourth straight win

     Groton — Nick Mascelli (Wagner) and Brett Bond (Missouri) had three hits each as the Mystic Schooners won their fourth straight game, beating the New Bedford Bay Sox 7-4 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Saturday.

    Kyle Dube (Fairfield) earned the victory, allowing four hits and two runs over six innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Ryan Thomas (Marist) pitched two hitless innings to earn his second save of the season.

    Toby Handley (Stony Brook), Scotty Bradley (Indiana) and C.J. Moore (Grambling) had two hits each for the Schooners (8-6).

    New York-Penn League

    • Josh Lester's two-run tripled highlighted a three-run top of the sixth inning that led the Connecticut Tigers to a 5-2 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones. Lester scored of a sacrifice fly by Hunter Swilling to cap the scoring in the sixth. Lester also doubled for the Tigers (6-3). Felix Viloria got the win in relief, pitching to scoreless innings, and Yordy Cabrera pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.  

    Zone 6 American Legion

    • Willimantic swept a home doubleheader from Ledyard/Pawcatuck, winning the opener 8-0 and rallying for an 8-5 win in the second game. Kyle Whipple had a bases-clearing triple in the second game for Ledyard/Pawcatuck (2-8).

    District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

    • Waterford defeated East Lyme 6-1 at Washington Park in Groton as Bobby Silva was the wining pitcher and J.J. Brennen doubled to highlight a four-run fourth inning and Joey Scotti also doubled. Eddie Kafton had an RBI single for East Lyme.

    • Groton defeated Pawcatuck 10-6 at Washington Park, scoring nine runs in the second inning highlighted by Phil Warner's two-run double and Derek Pelletier's two-run single. Chip Kamerica pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts for Groton. Tyler Stafford had a two-run double for Pawcatuck.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (14)

    • T.J. Horner went 4-for-4 with a double as East Lyme defeated Groton 18-1 in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Christopher Malcom added a double and triple for East Lyme while Isher Edwards had a hit and an RBI for Groton.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (13)

    • Jared Burrows was the winning pitcher and doubled and scored three runs as Waterford beat East Lyme 12-1 in five innings. Burrows pitched a two-hitter. Ryan O'Connell doubled and scored twice, Ryan Bakken scored three runs and Trey Brennan scored twice for Waterford. Ben Orefice singled and scored a run for East Lyme.

    District 10 baseball (11-12)

    • Mystic defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 17-0 as Jason Erb pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts for the win and added three hits, including a double. Ryan O'Connor added four hits, including a grand slam, triple and six RBI, while Cam McGugan had a home run and three RBI and Caleb Mewhad had two doubles. Avery Wyman had two hits for Lyme/Old Lyme.

    • Pawcatuck defeated East Haddam 6-3 as winning pitcher Creigton Wesson record 10 strikeouts and also had two hits, including a two-run double. Brandt Ogden and Bobby Dimock added two hits apiece for Pawcatuck while John Sodergren had two hits for East Haddam.

    • Montville defeated New London 3-2 as Miles Sarmiento was 2-for-3 with a double and Blake Chapman scored the winning run on a passed ball. Hunter MacDuff went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored for New London.

    District 10 baseball (10-11)

    • Mystic defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 16-4 on Friday as Jose Rodriguez, Mikey Wagner and Ethan Mireault each had three hits, Charlie MacPherson added two hits and Rodriguez, Wagner andGabe Morton each drove in three runs. Jaden Reyes had two hits, including a double, with an RBI for Lyme/Old Lyme.

    District 10 baseball (9-10)

    • Groton defeated Montville 16-7 on Friday as winning pitcher Brady Boryesewicz had thre hits and Rey Hidalgo added two. Joey Wainwright three hits, including a double and triple, for Montville.

    • Mystic defeated Pawcatuck 8-5 on Friday as Sidharth Bulusu struck out three in relief to earn the white. Jackson Lalima had a bases-loaded triple for Mystic while Austen Linieus was 2-for-2 and reached base four times for Pawcatuck.

    District 10 softball (11-12)

    • Pawcatuck defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 11-3 on Friday as Shea O'Connor pitched a complete game, Sophia Bell had triple and double and Maggie Constantine had a triple.

    College hockey

    • UConn's Joseph Masonius was drafted by the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the sixth round (181st overall) of the NHL Draft in Buffalo, N.Y. Masonius, a defenseman who had six goals and 15 assists as a freshman, joins class mate Tage Thompson in the 2016 NHL Draft class. Thompson became the first player in program history to be drafted in the first round when he was selected 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues on Friday. Both players hope to earn a spot on the U.S. National Junior team that will participate in the World Junior Championship in December.
