    Local roundup: Tigers can't break through against Spikes

    Norwich — The Connecticut Tigers managed just five hits in a 3-1 loss to the State College Spikes in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium.

    The Spikes (18-6) broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning off Tigers starter Gregory Soto and added one in the fifth. The Tigers (15-9) came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Tanner Donnels, his fifth RBI in the last six games.

    The Connecticut bullpen pitched four scoreless innings.

    The teams will play again at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Dodd.

    State Babe Ruth (14)

    • Steve Cantres pitched a complete game for Waterford in a 5-2 loss to New Milford in the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Cadin Maynard and Petey Kiefer each had a hit for Waterford.

    District 10 softball (9-10)

    • Sophie Ash pitched a no-hitter for Groton/Mystic in a 9-0 victory over East Lyme, lifting Groton/Mystic into Thursday's semifinal round. No. 1 Waterford will meet No. 4 Montville at 5 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Field in East Lyme, while No. 2 Groton/Mystic plays No. 3 Salem/Bozrah at 7:30. Ash struck out 11 and Charlotte Cabral and Grace Jenkins doubled in the victory.

    • Anna Dziecinny pitched a no hitter, striking out 11, in Waterford's 28-0 win against New London. Sam SanJuan hit a home run and a double, Emma Hall a triple and a double, Erica Mugovero three singles, Lucy DÁmico a triple and Dziecinny two doubles and two triples.

    Miezejeski named to call all-star game

    • Sanford's Tom Porter and Mystic's Mike Miezejeski were selected as the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game play-by-play duo after a vote by their fellow broadcasting peers and a representative of each team's front office. The game will be played July 17 in Newport.

    Miezejeski, an Ivoryton native, is in his third summer with the Schooners, his first as full-time broadcaster. He is a senior-to-be at Keene State College in New Hampshire, where he majors in journalism and serves as co-host of a sports talk radio show on the college's student radio station, WKNH. Miezejeski served as the lead broadcaster of the Little East Conference softball tournament this past spring.

    The NECBL will offer free broadcast coverage of Sunday's action on the NECBL Broadcast Network. Video and audio presentations will be available online and on mobile devices.
