    Local roundup: Waterford advances to Babe Ruth 13 state final

    Stamford — Waterford advanced to the championship game in the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-year-old state tournament with a 9-0 win over Darien on Thursday night.

    The District 6 champions will play the New Milford-Stamford winner at 7 p.m. Friday.

    Ryan Bakken earned the victory, allowing six hits over seven innings with two strikeouts. Luke Sokolski singled, doubled, tripled and scored twice, Jared Burrows singled, doubled and scored three times and Matt Sanford scored twice for Waterford.

    District 10 baseball (9-10)

    • Mystic beat New London 14-8 to sweep the best-of-three finals. Jackson LaLima hit a two-run homer for Mystic and Donte Valentine picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief. Martin Light homered for New London.

    District 10 softball (9-10)

    • Waterford advanced to the best-of-three finals with a 21-0 win over Montville. Lucy D'Amico, Marina Colonis and Emilia Podeszwa were each 3-for-3 and Sam San Juan, Ava Burrows and Erica Mugovero had two hits each for Waterford. San Juan had a triple and D'Amico, Colonis, Burrows and Mugovero had doubles. Anna Dziecinny was the winning pitcher, strikring out nine. 

    State Senior League softball (15-16)

    • Waterford won its first two games in the state tournament at Durham. Waterford plays Stafford in the final at 6 p.m. Friday; if Stafford wins, a second game would follow. Waterford beat Stafford 3-2 in eight innings on Tuesday and beat Plainfield/Moosup 8-5 on Wednesday.

    Against Stafford, Olivia Pacheco pitched a compete game with 10 strikeouts and also doubled. Mia Brennan had a triple, and Marilyn Childs singled home Pacheco with the game winner in the eighth. Pacheco also went the distance against Plainfield/Moosup and struck out nine while Childs had two hits.

    New York-Penn League

    • Three Tri-City pitchers combined to hold Connecticut to four hits in a 2-0 loss for the Tigers. Blaise Salter had two hits to lead Connecticut (17-10). Taylor Hicks (0-1) gave up a two-run homer to Ronnie Dawson in the seventh inning to give the ValleyCats (14-13) the lead. The Tigers had their 28-inning scoreless streak snapped.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Connor Dulin and Johnny Staubley combined to pitch a three-hitter with 16 strikeouts as Waterford Blue beat Waterford Red 9-1. Robert Parra and Staubley each had a single and a double and Jake Huff and Chris Johnson had doubles for Blue. James Conlan doubled for Red.
