    Local roundup: New London's Marceau, Niantic's Sheffield share Zone 6 MVP honors

    Justin Marceau of New London and Niantic’s Hunter Sheffield were selected as the American Legion baseball Zone 6 co-Most Valuable Players.

    Quantique White of New London was named the zone’s outstanding pitcher and Tom Vivirito of New London and Grant Livingston of zone champion Niantic shared the coach of the year award.

    Selected to the all-star team were Brent Conderino of Waterford (catcher), Ben Desaulnier of Danielson (first base), Marceau (third base), Sheffield (middle infield), Cooper Robinson of New London (middle infield), outfielders Alex Tryon of Niantic, Robert Thorburn of Norwich and Anthony Stigler of Willimantic, pitchers Collin Bakken of Waterford, Matt Przybysz of Niantic and White and utility player John Moody of Ledyard/Pawcatuck.

    Reserves on the team were Will Trask and Trent Appleton of Jewett City, Nick Miner of Danielson, Josh Gurnack of Norwich, Logan Banker of Niantic and Brody Labbe of Willimantic.

    Each team had a sportsmanship winner. The winners were Eli Majek of Danielson, Trask of Jewett City, Brandon Qiu of Ledyard/Pawcatuck, Caleb Deslauriers of Moosup, Brett Perry of New London, Matt Fanelli of Niantic, Jimmy McNally of Norwich, Alex Angelo of TriTown, Walker Sutman of Waterford and Clay Tamburri of Willimantic.

    New York-Penn League

    • Sam Machonis went 3-for-4, including a double and triple, with two RBI and a run as the Connecticut Tigers hammered the Tri-City ValleyCats on Saturday night, 8-2, before 2,241 at Dodd Stadium.

    Joey Havrilak had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Tigers (22-19) and Junnell Ledezma scored three times. Also, Daniel Pinero had two hits, a run and a run and Cole Bauml singled and had two RBI.

    Austin Sodders allowed four hits over the first five innings with five strikeouts for Connecticut and Joe Navilhon pitched 1.1 innings to earn the win.

    Taylor Jones doubled and scored for the ValleyCats (22-19) and Brauly Mejia had two hits and an RBI.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth playoffs

    • Waterford Blue advanced to the championship round with a 10-5 win over Tri-County. Blue faces unbeaten Waterford Red Sunday at Waterford High School at 5 p.m. A Blue victory would force a deciding game to follow.

    Tommy Feliciano doubled twice, Johnny Staubley had two hits and Griffin Beaney doubled for Blue. Mike O’Connell and Kyle Wells had two hits each for Tri-County.
