    Tigers take wild-card lead in New York-Penn League playoff chase

    Norwich — The Connecticut Tigers took over the lead in the New York-Penn League wild-card race with a 1-0 victory over the Staten Island Yankees on Monday night before 2,342 at Dodd Stadium.

    The Tigers (35-27) lead the Yankees (34-27) by a half-game for the final league playoff spot and trail the Lowell Spinners (37-25) by two games in the Stedler Division race.

    Connecticut opens a series at Hudson Valley on Tuesday.

    Four Connecticut pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. Starter Austin Sodders scattered three hits over three innings with five strikeouts, extending his scoreless innings streak to 16, while Jordan Smith allowed only two hits over four innings with five strikeouts. Logan Longwith pitched a scoreless eighth in his Tigers debut and Joe Navilion struck out Eduardo Navas with runners on second and third in the ninth to preserve the win.

    The Tigers scored their lone run in the first when Danny Woodrow singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a two-out single by Austin Athmann.
