    Local Roundup: Tigers snap three-game losing streak

    Norwich - The Connecticut Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak, beating the Hudson Valley Renegades 5-3 Friday night in a New York-Penn League baseball game.

    Connecticut (25-32) trailed 3-1 before scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth inning. Timothy Remes drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-2 then Jordan Dean's two-run single gave the Tigers their first lead of the night. Juaner Aguasvivas added a run-scoring double in the eighth.

    Tyler Hanover had two hits for the Tigers and Angel Nesbit (2-3) pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the victory.

    U.S. U18 team heads to semifinals

    • Baylor-bound Alexia Prince scored a game-high 19 points to lead the USA Basketball Women's U18 Team to an 87-36 victory over Colombia to close out pool play in the FIBA Americas Championship in Gurabo, Puerto Rico.

    The victory advanced the U.S. to the semifinals as the No. 1 seed out of Group A and also earned a berth to the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women, hosted by Lithuania.

    In addition to Prince, who shot 8 of 14 from the field, incoming UConn freshman Morgan Tuck shot 7 of 10 from the field and contributed 17 points and six rebounds. Tuck is one of three incoming UConn players on the team, joining Breanna Stewart (6 points, 6 rebounds) and Moriah Jefferson (8 points, 6 assists).

    Ahnrud added to Bears coaching staff

    • Greg Ahnrud has been named an assistant men's and women's track and field coach at the Coast Guard Academy. Ahnrud served as an assistant coach for both cross country and track and field at Rhode Island College from 2009-12.

    Speedbowl's backup plan

    • Waterford Speedbowl officials have announced a plan to use Sunday as a rain date for its fifth annual Wings & Wheels event, scheduled for tonight.

    The event was originally scheduled for last Saturday, when weather concerns forced the postponement until tonight. The use of Sunday as a rain date comes from concern over future availability for the visiting racing series competing at Wings & Wheels.

    Ledyard fall sports
