    Local roundup: Stonington edges NFA 2-1 in matchup of field hockey unbeatens

    Norwich — Margit Burgess scored a pair of goals as Stonington edged Norwich Free Academy 2-1 in an early-season matchup of unbeaten Eastern Connecticut Conference field hockey teams on Friday.

    Burgess broke a 1-1 tie with 12:14 left in the game for the Bears (5-0, 5-0), scoring off a rebound following a penalty corner shot by Lexi Woviotas.

    The teams traded first half goals with Burgiss converting a penalty corner by Abby Flakus with 4:39 left in the half and Tayla Wilson, assisted by Hailey Conley, tying the game for NFA (4-1, 4-1) with only 24 seconds remaining in the half.

    Helen Heyse made 11 saves in goal for the Wildcats while Stonington goalie Cameron Dreher stopped five shots.

    College volleyball

    • Coast Guard Academy beat Connecticut College 26-24, 25-18, 25-20 in a nonleague match. Freshman Angelou Dunton had 15 kills and nine digs, freshman Alexi Deane had 10 kills and freshman Makenna Martin had 41 assists for Coast Guard (7-5). Alex McDevitt had 10 kills, Katia Elisman had 24 assists and Sam Hunter had nine digs for Conn (5-2). 

    H.S. volleyball

    • Marissa Smith had 21 assists and six kills as Old Lyme beat North Branford 25-18, 25-19, 25-20 in a Shoreline Conference match. Tessa Kroes had five aces and Caroline Sirna had six kills for Old Lyme.

    • Ahna Harkness had seven aces and nine assists, leading Ledyard to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 win over New London in an ECC Division I match. Liz Martin had five aces and two blocks and Isabelle Hammar had six kills for Ledyard (4-3, 1-2). New London is 0-5, 0-2.

    • Olivia Pacheco served 10 aces to help Waterford outlast Montville 25-19, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-22 in an ECC Division II match. Alaina Moger added 39 assists and Leah Terrell seven kills for the Lancers (3-3, 2-0) while Kristi Petrova had 11 kills, Christi Johnson seven kills and Brooke LaVallie 27 assists for the Indians (1-6, 0-3).

    • Madison Bodley had 13 kills, five digs and five aces as Norwich Tech beat Windham Tech 3-1 in a Constitution State Conference match. Vanessa Gumbs had nine kills, nine digs and six aces for the Warriors (5-1, 2-0), who won 23-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-19.

    • Caroline Parker had eight digs and Ryana Kelsey six kills during Fitch's 25-17, 25-10, 25-16 non-conference loss to Farmington. The Falcons are 4-3.

    • Ellis Tech beat Grasso Tech 21-25, 25-18, 25-7, 25-6 in a CSC match. Alyssa Delaney had 10 kills for Ellis and Erin Blake had seven service points for Grasso.

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • Ledyard took the top four spots en route to a 16-43 win over Old Lyme in a nonleague meet. Jacob Money won the race with a time of 19:14 followed by Zak King (19:15), Geralson Withrow (19:46) and Domenic Murray (20:02) of Ledyard (5-1). Old Lyme's Nick Myers (20:18) finished fifth.

    H.S. swimming

    • Alyson Lowney and Paulomi Sardar won two individual events apiece as Ledyard/Stonington defeated NFA 98-63 in the ECC. Lowney won the 200-yard freestle (2:12.30) and 500 free (5:52.81) for the Falcons (3-1, 3-1) while Sardar captured the 50 free (27.20) and 100 free (1:00.20). Katie Spendolini won the 100 backstroke (1:12.42) and Makayla Jones the 100 breaststroke (1:31.51) for NFA (0-5, 0-4).

    • Maddie Johanson and Olivia Strelevitz won two events each as Ledyard beat Windham/Lyman 83-44 in an ECC meet. Johanson won the 200 IM (2:34.49) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.91) and Strelevitz won the 100 butterfly (1:07.32) and 500 freestyle (5:33.30). Kaelin Lozier, Hannah Roediger and Madison Sanborn also won events for Ledyard (2-2, 2-2).
