    Local roundup: UConn routs BC 5-0 in NCAA field hockey tournament

    Syracuse, N.Y. — Junior Charlotte Veitner had two assists to become UConn's career points leader and they couldn't have come at a better time as the Huskies rolled to a 5-0 victory over Boston College in the first round of the NCAA Division I field hockey tournament on Saturday.

    The Huskies (21-1) will face host Syracuse (15-3), a 5-1 winner over Harvard, at 2 p.m. today in the quarterfinals with a berth in the Final Four on the line. Syracuse beat the Huskies in last year's NCAA semifinals.

    Veitner now has 214 career points, one more than former record holder Lauren Henderson.

    Amanda Collins led UConn with two goals.

    The Huskies (21-1) used Veitner's two assists, as well as two goals by sophomore Amanda Collins, to dominate the No. 11 Eagles at Coyne Stadium. With two points, Veitner now has 214 career points – one more than former record holder, Lauren Henderson.

    UConn, which will be appearing in the quarterfinals for the seventh straight season, broke the game open with three goals in a five-minute span midway through the second half. Collins scored the first one (Veitner assisted for the her record) followed by Anna Middendorf and Svea Boker.

    Women's soccer

    • Stephanie Ribeiro and Rachel Hill each had one goal and one assist as UConn rolled to a 4-2 victory over Albany in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Huskies (19-2-1) will play Auburn (15-6-1), the overall No. 4 seed, in the second round at a site, date and time to be determined. Auburn defeated South Alabama 4-0.

    UConn took control early, scoring twice in the first nine minutes on goals by Alexa Casimiro and Ribeiro. The Great Danes (11-8-1) pulled to within 2-1, but Hill's goal in the 51st minute pushed the lead back to two goals and Maddie Damm made it 4-1 with a goal in the 80th minute.

    UConn outshot Albany 22-7.

    Women's cross country

    • Connecticut College seniors Ashley Curran and Bella Franz had Top 20 finishes in the NCAA Division III New England meet at Westfield State and qualified for the national championship race next Saturday at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Curran finished in 21:41 to 13th while Franz placed 16th in 21:45 over the 6K course. The Camels placed placed 14th with 423 points. Also for Conn, Hannah Noyes was 115th (23:33), Julianna Donovan was 137th (23:56) and Caitlin Teare was 142nd (23:59).

    • Coast Guard Academy finished 17th as senior Bonny Turnage was the top finisher for the Bears in 77th place (23:03). She was followed by Anita Green in 98th (23:24), Gretchen Krause in 102nd (23:26), Jenn Haley in 147th (24:02) and Kirsten Carson 162nd (24:14).

    Men's cross country

    • Conn College senior Ben Bosworth posted a time of 25:08 to place 15th in the NCAA Division III New England Championship meet at Westfield State. Bosworth now awaits word on whether or not he's qualified for the national meet next Saturday in Louisville. Freshman Danny Aschale also earned All-New England honors by placing 34th in 25:28 as the Camels finished 11th with 290 points. Also for Conn, Connor Trapp was 54th (25:50), Kyle Hawk was 88th (26:15) and Zander Mintz was 99th (26:22).

    • Coast Guard finished 19th as senior Zachary Velasquez finished in 26:23 (101st place) while Timothy O'Loughlin was 116th (26:47) followed by Christian Fields (126th, 27:02), James Rimmele (128th, 27:03) and Jacob Panning (131st, 27:06). 

    Women's basketball

    • Stonington's Tatyana LaFrance Boyce had 33 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead UConn-Avery Point to its first win, an 89-81 victory over Massasoit Community College in in a Region XXI game. Taleeha Green added 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Pointers (1-3, 1-1) while Meagan Bianchi had 16 points and seven assists and New London's Kenya Capers had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

    Men's basketball

    • Tysheen McCrea had 23 points and seven assists to lead UConn-Avery Point to a 72-65 win over Massasoit Community College in Groton. Will Orr added 16 for the Pointers (2-1) while Remy Bonser finished with 12 on four 3-pointers and Mack Osias added 11.

    Men's hockey

    • Tage Thompson scored a pair of power play goals and goaltender Rob Nichols made a season-high 46 saves UConn played No. 14 Ohio State to a 3-3 tie. Trailing 3-2 in the third period, Brian Morgan tied the game for the Huskies (3-3-5), who led 2-0 early. Ohio State is 6-1-4.

    Men's swimming

    • Dan Moreno won two events and was on a winning relay team, but Coast Guard was beaten by MIT 151-147  in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Moreno won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.69) and 200 IM (1:57.75) and joining Ross Garrett, Patrick Jackson and Chasse Sodemann to win the 200 medley relay (1:36.15). Taylor Rowe (1,000 freestyle, 10:01.69), Mike Franco (500 free, 4:50.41), Sodemann (100 breast, 57.78) and Owen Gibson (200 butterfly, 1:59.77) also won individual races for the Bears.

    Wrestling

    • Junior Chris Sullivan captured firt place in the 157-pound division to lift Coast Guard to a fifth-place team finish at the Roger Williams Invitational in Bristol, R.I.  The Bears scored 117.5 points while host Roger Williams won the meet with 150.5 points. Sullivan, ranked seventh nationally at 157, defeated two high-ranked wrestliers to win his weight class. He defeated No. 6 Ty Herzog in the semifinals before earning an 8-2 decision over No. 4 Jeff Nojnacki of Messiah in the title match.

    Also for Coast Guard, sophomore Nick Remke finished second at 165, losing to Colin Navicks of Stevens Tech 11-6 in the final, while senior Matt McAllister, a former State Open champion from Bacon Academy, place third at 141 with a 7-1 win over Shane Ross in the consolation final. The Bears had three other place-winners. At 174, seniors Dan Fiorvanti and Michael Palomba both placed as Fiorvanti lost a tight third-place match to Taylor Shay of Roger Williams 6-5 and Palomba was a medical forfeit in the fifth place match. Senior Phil Azzari, meanwhile, defeated Kyle Koser in the fifth-place match 3-1.
