    Local roundup: Vikings' Stelter wins Class M 50 freestyle state title

    Middletown — East Lyme's Gretchen Stelter won the 50-yard freestyle state championship to lead the Vikings to a third-place finish in the CIAC Class M swimming and diving championships on Tuesday night at Wesleyan University.

    Stelter won the race in 25.23 seconds and added a sixth in the 100 free in 55.82. She also helped two relay teams earn medals as East Lyme finished with 447 points to edge North Haven by a point for the bronze medal. Brookfield won the team championship with 688.5 points followed by Lauralton Hall with 646.5.

    Stelter teamed up with Mary Kathryn Taylor, Kate Orefice and Carlie Biondi to place fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.15) and joined Taylor, Taylor Gray and Maeve Counter to finish sixth in the 400 free relay (3:52.2).

    Also for the Vikings, Counter was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.64) and Taylor placed sixth (1:01.04), while Gray finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.77) and the 200 medley relay team of Gray, Counter, Orefice and Victoria Chen finished sixth in 1:56.54.

    Ledyard placed 13th in the team standings with 129 points and was led by Olivia Strelevitz, who finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.97.

    Men's basketball

    • Mitchell College opened its season with an 85-72 loss to UMass Boston. Brayvon Young scored 14 points, Domenico Santiago had 12 points, Alan Morgan had 11 points and eight assists and Hasani Williams had 11 points and eight rebounds for Mitchell.

    • Roger Williams used a 10-0 run in the second half to pull away for a 77-69 win over Coast Guard in the season opener for both teams. Micah Baldez had 16 points, Nolan Benson scored 10 and freshman Pat Witkowski had nine rebounds for Coast Guard. 

    Women's basketball

    • Tatyana LaFrance-Boyce had 51 points and nine rebounds to lead UConn-Avery Point to a 109-66 victory over Bristol Community College in a Region 21 game. LaFrance-Boyce broke the single-game record of 39 set by Brianna Padewski in 2015. Meagan Bianchi added 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Pointers (2-3, 2-1) while Mia Dupuis scored 13 points and Taleeha Green had 10 rebounds and 18 assists.

    • Gill Gerton 19 points and six rebounds as Coast Guard overcame an early eight-point deficit to defeat Salve Regina 62-59 in its season opener. Jill Bray added 13 points for the Bears, including three 3-pointers, while Breanna Wood added 12 points and nine rebounds.

    • Albertus Magnus beat Mitchell College 81-40 in the season opener for both teams. Jessica Shepherd led Mitchell with nine points. 

    College baseball

    • Avery Point baseball coach Mike Aldrich has announced that three of his players have signed National Letter of Intent forms to continue their careers. Signing letters to play in the 2018 season are East Lyme's Chris Leindecker, Shea Dooley of Wolcott and Waterford's Josh Vincent, who played at New London.

    Leindecker, a right-handed pitcher, will play at Southern Connecticut State and left-handed pitcher Dooley will play at Central Connecticut State. Vincent, a right-handed pitcher, will play at Division II Chowan University in North Carolina. All three will be sophomores for the Pointers this season.

    H.S. cross country

    • Catherine Shannon of Williams School finished second at the NEPSTA Division IV meet on Saturday at Bath, Maine. Shannon, an eighth-grader, had a time of 20:29. Teammate and classmate Mary Madaus with fourth in 20:37 and seventh-grader Grace Cassineri was 20th (22:19). The girls did not place as a team but the boys' team finished 10th. Making the top 50 were juniors Will Jarrett (eighth, 17:58) and Colin Madaus (36th, 19:11).

    Black Wolves acquire O'Connor

    • The New England Black Wolves of the National Lacrosse League announced the acquisition of Riley O'Connor from the Calgary Roughnecks in exchange for a second round pick in the 2017 NLL Entry Draft. O'Connor, a 6-foot-1 forward, was selected seventh overall in the 2015 NLL Entry Draft and had six goals and 30 assists as a rookie. He played collegiately at Georgetown.
