    Local college roundup: Conn women earn No. 2 seed for NESCAC hockey tourney

    New London — Connecticut College remained in the hunt for the program's first New England Small College Athletic Conference women's hockey regular season title until the final day of the regular season.

    After beating Hamilton College, 5-1, on Saturday at Dayton Arena, the Camels needed Middlebury to lose to Williams in a night game.

    But it didn't happen, as Middlebury (16-6-2, 11-4-1) won 5-3 to secure the top seed in the conference tournament, which begins next week. The Camels (14-7-3, 10-5-1) will be a program-best No. 2 seed and host a quarterfinal on Saturday.

    On Senior Day, Ashley Anctil and Steph Izzi buried shots during a three-goal second period and fellow senior Katherine Chester made 21 saves. Seniors Cassie Hunter and Julie Beattie each added an assist.

    After Hamilton (14-7-3, 9-5-2) tied the game at 1-1, Anctil's tip-in put the Camels ahead just over three minutes into the second period. Paige Michel, Samantha Estes and Lily Connolly also had goals for the Camels, who held a 32-22 edge in shots. 

    Women's basketball

    • Taty LaFrance Boyce broke her school record by scoring 55 points and added 12 rebounds, 14 steals and six assists to pace UConn Avery Point past Bunker Hill 117-41 in Region 21. Meagan Bianchi had 29 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds for the Pointers (12-9).

    • Junior Gill Gerton had 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to spark Coast Guard Academy past Mount Holyoke 87-41 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Six players scored in double figures, including Amanda Roy (14), Jill Bray (12), Laura Irish (12), Breanna Wood (11), Micaela Martinelli (10) for the Bears (11-14, 8-8) in their regular season finale. They'll open NEWMAC tournament play on Wednesday at WPI.

    • Mitchell College extended its season-high winning streak to seven straight, beating Becker Colege 60-56 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Senior Jessica Shepherd led the way with 22 points and broke a 53-all tie with 3-pointer, one of her six from behind the arc. Sophomore Alexandra Kolb had 14 points and six rebounds and freshman Allegra Jones added 11 points off the bench for the Mariners (12-13, 12-6), who will host a first round NECC tournament game against Wheelock on Tuesday.

    • Conn College trailed by only four at halftime to third-seeded Bowdoin College before losing 72-47 in a NESCAC quarterfinal game. The sixth-seeded Camels (16-8) were outscored 21-6 in the third quarter. Meg Corcoran had 11 points and eight rebounds and Liz Malman added 10 points for Conn. 

    Men's basketball

    • Coast Guard ended its season with an 81-78 win over Springfield in the NEWMAC. Adrian Chuquillangui scored a game-high 24 points, 17 in the second half, on his Senior Day to help the Bears (7-17, 3-13) overcome a 12-point halftime deficit and snap a five-game losing streak. Senior Devon Zych added 11 points and 10 rebounds while Patrick Witkowski had 19 points.

    • Mitchell saw its three-game winning streak snapped with a 102-88 loss to Becker in the NECC. Geary McLeod came off the bench to contribute 18 points while Brayvon Young (15), Alan Morgan (14) and Domenico Santiago (13) also scored in double figures for the Mariners (7-18, 7-8), who open NECC tournament play on the road Tuesday.

    • Avery Point lost to Bunker Hill in a Region 21 game, 91-64. Amadi White had 23 points and Will Orr scored 19 for the Pointers (9-14, 9-10).  

    • Tyrei Randall scored 23 points in St. Thomas More's 77-60 loss to South Kent on Friday night. Randall also had six rebounds while E.J. Anosike had 11 points and five rebounds and Maceo Jack added 14 points for the Chancellors.

    Baseball

    • Coast Guard was outscored 31-5 while dropping a season-opening doubleheader to Centre College of Kentucky at the Perfect Game Complex in Emerson, Ga. Centre scored 12 runs in the first inning on the way to a 23-3 rout in game one. The Bears managed just four singles — one apiece by Will Stephens, Brendan McNeil, Alex Murdock and Reed Jenkins. In an 8-2 loss to game two, senior Colton Cannon pitched seven strong innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run while striking out 10, but the Bears couldn't hold a 2-1 lead. Zach Serna had an RBI single and finished with three hits while Kyle Jackson tripled and scored.

    Men's track

    • Junior Darius Adams set a school record in the long jump with a winning distance of 23 feet, 3.25 inches, leading Coast Guard to a sixth place finish at the New England Division III Championship at Tufts. The 4x800 relay quartet of Sydney Johnson, Riley Miller, William Klein and Benjamin Taminger took first in 7:53.29 for the Bears, who finished with 48 points. Tufts was the team champion with 127. The 4x400 relay team of Nicholas Frystak Jacob Pawlina, Luke Rehfuss and Raeford Penny ran to All-New England honors with a second-place finish in 3:21.07, while Brett Foster was third in the 1,000 (2:29.74).

    • Conn College's Danny Aschale posted a time of 8:24.33 to finish fourth in the 3,000 at the New England meet. The Camels were 15th. In the 5,000, Scott Mason was fifth (15:05.21), while the 4x800 relay team of Ben Bosworth, Price Day, Christian Carr-Locke and Aschale placed fifth in a season-best 7:59.49.

    Women's track

    • Coast Guard finished in 11th place at the New England Division III Championship with 20 points. Gabrielle Troise earned All-New England honors twice, placing sixth and posting a school record in the weight throw (49-8) and also was seventh in the shot put (38-11.5). Ashlee Johnson also set a school record and earned All-New England honors in the 600, placing sixth (1:37.87), while the 4x800 relay team of Anita Green, Morgan Garrett, Adora Lawrence and Johnson finished second in 9:31.66.

    • Conn College finished a program-best ninth at the New England meet, scoring 21 points. Lauren Kennedy was second in the shot put (41-10.5) and Koko Mensah placed third (41-1.75), while Bella Franz took third (2:15.74) in the 800 and Shannon Kennedy set a school record in the pentathlon, placing eighth with 2,918 points. Kennedy set a school record in the long jump (16-10.5).

    Men's hockey

    • Dylan Chase scored an unassisted goal and Avery Gobbo made 31 saves, as Conn College finished the season with a 1-1 overtime tie against Bowdoin in the NESAC. The Camels win up4-16-3, 2-13-3.
