    Local roundup: Conn men beat Colby 11-9 in NESCAC lacrosse action

    Waterville, Maine — Connecticut College outscored Colby 6-1 in the third quarter and held on for an 11-9 win in a New England Small College Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday.

    Sean Smith had three goals and an assist, Jackson Kleintz had two goals and an assist, Maximilian King scored twice and P.J. Kelleher and Tucker Mscisz had a goal and two assists each for Conn (4-3, 1-2).

    Conn's Ben Parens won 22 draws (22-for-24) and had 17 ground balls and scored the final goal in the third period. 

    In other games:

    • Anthony Wyler had four goals and an assist as Coast Guard Academy beat Misericordia 13-5 in a nonleague game. Ian Logan had three goals, Jack Pope and Cole Hudson each scored twice, Riley McNulty and Benner Geurtsen had two assists each and Trey Johnson made 14 saves for Coast Guard (5-2).

    • Mitchell College lost to Rivier in a nonleague game, 15-4. East Lyme's McCarthy Brodaski had two goals, Jacob Setzko had a goal and an assist, Michael Frosina scored and Oakdale's Kyle Marsh had an assist for Mitchell (1-4). 

    Women's lacrosse

    • Western Connecticut scored four straight goals late in the first half to build a 6-1 lead on the way to a 12-6 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game. Freshman Abigail Bradford scored three goals for the Bears (2-6) while ex-Fitch star Daria McKenna added one goal and one assist.

    • Conn College lost to No. 19 Colby 19-11 in the NESCAC. Tina Balzotti had four goals, Julia Loesch had two goals and three assists, Hannah Donegan had a goal and two assists and Kirby Heffrin had two goals and eight draws for Conn (0-5, 0-3).

    • Regis led 15-2 at halftime and went on to beat Mitchell 20-5 in the New England Collegiate Conference opener for both teams. Kate McCormack scored three times and Ashley Murtha had two goals for Mitchell (0-2).

    College baseball

    • East Lyme's C.J. Leindecker pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game to lift Avery Point to a 3-0 victory over Westchester CC and a sweep of their doubleheader. The Pointers (9-5) won the opener, 3-2 in nine innings, on a game-winning RBI single by Mike Chiovitti, Leindecker (2-0) struck out five and got the win when Avery Point scored three times in the fifth, the key hit a two-run single by Mike Corso. In the opener, Waterford' Mike Rocchetti doubled with one out in the ninth, Fitch's Cooper Robinson walked and Chiovitti delivered the game winner. Cooper scored two runs and Shea Dooley allowed only one run over six innings.

    • Jakari Pellegrini pitched a four-hitter as Mitchell College beat Trinity 5-2 in the second game of a doubleheader after Trinity won the opener 14-3. Pellegrini (1-1) struck out five with three walks and Jack Finnegan scored twice for Mitchell (9-7). Francis Prettitore had two hits in the opener for Mitchell.

    • UConn lost to Seton Hall 3-2. The Huskies (11-9) trailed 3-1 entering the ninth inning but closed it to 3-2 when North Stonington's Troy Stefanski doubled home a run. Jack Lambrecht had three hits and Tyler Gnesda homered for UConn.

    • Coast Guard was swept in a doubleheader against MIT, losing 10-2 and 16-2 as both teams opened NEWMAC play. Will Stephens had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Pawcatuck's Brendan McNeil had a pair of hits in the opener. Coast Guard (6-10) was two-hit in Game 2.

    College softball

    • Kirsten Drobiak went 6-for-7 with a grand slam and five RBI in two games as Springfield swept Coast Guard 9-0 and 8-0 in the NEWMAC. Springfield (11-1, 2-0) led 1-0 in the opener before scoring eight runs in the sixth, capped by Drobiak's slam, to break the game open against the Bears (10-4, 0-2). Freshman Kayla Sowers had two hits for Coast Guard in the opener.

    Men's outdoor track

    • Conn College's Blake O'Neal won the 100-meter dash at the Wesleyan Invitational in a school-record 12.35 seconds. Teammate Price Day was also a winner, taking the 3,000 in 9:15.25. Jonathan Handy was second in the weight throw (11.18 meters) and third-place finishes went to Russell Adam in the 3,000 (9:24.79) and Andrew Peterson in the 800 (2:03.64).

    • Darius Adams of Coast Guard was fourth in the long jump at Richmond's Fred Hardy Invite (22-4.25). Teammate Benjamin Taminger was eighth in the 800 (1:56.67) and the Bears' 4x800 relay team of Caleb Teachout, Will Klein, Riley Miller and Brett Foster was third (7:57.74). On Friday, Jacob Pawlina was fifth in the javelin (188-1). James Rimmele also had a fifth-place finish in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:35.84).

    Women's outdoor track

    • Conn College's Koko Mensah won the shot put at the Wesleyan Invite and set a school record (42-9). Also winning for Conn was Micaela Nee in the 3,000 (11:22) and the 4x400 relay team of Leila Alfaro, Alicia Palmer, Olivia Vener and Shannon Kennedy (4:18.12). Gianna Rocchio was second in the 800 (2:36.34) and third-place finishes went to Eva Brydson (3,000, 11:34), Alfaro (60 hurdles, 9.81), Kennedy (long jump, 16-5) and Steph Van Riet (5,000, 20:03).

    • Caitlin Piker of Coast Guard finished fifth in the javelin (127-0) at the Fred Hardy Invite. Adora Lawrence was seventh in the 800 (2:20.13) and the Bears' 4x800 relay team of Bonny Turnage, Morgan Garrett, Ashlee Johnson and Lawrence were fourth in 9:44.05. On Friday, Gabrielle Troise finished sixth in the hammer throw (46.27 meters) and Rachel Burchill was fourth in the 10K (40:41.56).  

    Ruthko honored

    • Judy Ruthko of New London, a longtime referee with the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) Board 10 out of New Haven and currently the board's president, will be inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on Wednesday, April 19. Ruthko's career has spanned 29 seasons, including 10 high school state championship games. She was the 2010 recipient of the New Haven Tap-Off Club's Nate Winnick Award as the Official of the Year.

    She will be inducted along with high school players Susan Altieri (North Haven) and Michelle Florin Custis (Masuk), high school coach Fred Williams (Northwestern Regional), college player Jessica Grossarth (Fairfield), college coach Denise Bierly (Eastern Connecticut State) and honorary recipient William Dixon (Deputy Director, New Haven Parks & Rec).
