    Local roundup: Prettitore leads Mitchell to a sweep

    New London — Francis Prettitore was 6-for-8 and drove in nine runs as Mitchell College swept Albertus Magnus in a nonleague baseball doubleheader on Sunday, winning both games 18-2.

    Kyle Hartenstein had five hits and drove in four runs, Garet Griffin had four hits and drove in three runs and Prettitore had four doubles and scored four runs for Mitchell (11-6). Bryton Ferris (4-0) went six innings for the win in the opener, allowing one run on two hits. Brian Riker (2-1) pitched a five-hitter in the second game with four strikeouts and no walks. 

    In other games:

    • Avery Point was swept by Monroe College, losing the opener 9-1 and the second game 12-4. In the first game, Mike Chiovitti tripled in the sixth inning and scored on Mike Corso's sacrifice fly to break up the shutout. Tom Caravetta scored twice in the second game for the Pointers (9-7).

    • Mason Feole pitched five strong innings for the win as UConn beat Seton Hall 4-0. Feole (3-0) struck out a career-high eight. Willy Yahn had a two-run double in the sixth inning and Zac Susi had two hits and drove in a run for UConn (12-9). 

    College softball

    • Mitchell College split a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Elms, winning the opener 5-4 before losing the second game 8-0. Mitchell (2-5, 1-1) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener. Danielle Autieri had a two-run double for Mitchell.  

    Black Wolves fall

    • The New England Black Wolves lost to the Calgary Stampeders 18-13 in a National Lacrosse League game on Saturday before before 10,777 at the Saddledome. The Black Wolves (6-7) had their threee-game winning streak snapped.

    Kyle Buchanan had a career-high five goals and two assists for the Black Wolves, reaching 100 career goals with his second score of the night. Shawn Evans, who won NLL MVP honors as a member of the Roughnecks in 2013 and 2015, had three goals and four assists. Kevin Buchanan added a goal and four assists while Reilly O'Connor tied a career high with four assists. New England returns home to host Toronto on April 2 at 1 p.m.

    Road racing

    • Todd Bennett of Colchester won the St. Joseph School 3-Mile Race on Saturday at Baltic with a time of 17:05. Tricky Tanksley of Gales Ferry was second, and the top women's finisher, with a time of 18:05. Rounding out the top 10 were Bruce Christensen of Bolton (18:11), Sean Barkasy of Manchester (18:23), John Minervino of Higganum (19:05), Paul Baldini of Bristol (19:44), Norwich's Michael Fusaro (20:00), Keith Coburn of Waterford (20:16), Jacob Irons of Plainfield (20:21) and William Liebler of Southington (20:31).
