Local college roundup: Coast Guard sweeps, gives Koczajowski her 450th win
New London — Coast Guard Academy swept Wesleyan in a nonleague softball doubleheader on Thursday, winning the opener 6-3 and the second game 16-13.
Coast Guard coach Donna Koczajowski picked up her 450th career win in the opener and the 20th-year coach is 451-309-1.
In the opener, Emily Hogan drove in four runs and Audrey Bartz had two hits for Coast Guard. Julia Ferris (5-2) allowed six hits and one earned run for the win. Freshman Kayla Sowers was 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored and three RBI in the second game for the Bears (12-4). Carly Hattman and Bartz drove in three runs each.
In other games:
• Mitchell College swept Lyndon State in a nonleague doubleheader, winning 16-3 and 8-0 in a pair of five-inning games. Samantha DelConte was 6-for-7 with two doubles, two triples and six runs scored and Suzanne Vachon was 4-for-6 with a double, triple and four RBI for Mitchell (5-6). Italia Crick and Waterford's Megan Elphick had three hits and three RBI each for the Mariners and Taylor Duchesneau (4-5) picked up both wins and struck out 10.
Baseball
• Josh Nguyen-Domingo had three hits and drove in three runs as Coast Guard beat Albertus Magnus 12-4 in a nonleague game. Kyle Moore was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI, Reed Jenkins and Jake Behne had two RBI each and Nguyen-Domingo doubled twice and scored three runs for the Bears (7-11).
• Avery Point lost to the Mitchell junior varsity, 8-7. Avery Point outhit Mitchell 16-7 but the Mariners scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Mystic's Cooper Robinson, Mike Chiovitti, Tom Caravetta, Mike Savino and Malcolm Alleyne had two hits each for the Pointers (9-8) and Mike Rocchetti of Waterford and Alleyne drove in two runs each.
