    Local roundup: Schooners win their eighth straight

    Laconia, N.H. — The Mystic Schooners stretched their winning streak to eight games with a 6-4 win over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats on Thursday night.

    The Schooners (25-16) are in second place in the New England Collegiate League's Southern Division with three games left, 1.5 games ahead of third-place Plymouth. The second-place team hosts the third-place team in a one-game playoff. Ocean State (28-10) leads the division.

    Nick Mascelli (Wagner) was 5-for-5 with a homer and three runs to lead Mystic's 11-hit attack. Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) doubled twice and drove in two runs and John Trousdale (Alabama) singled and doubled for the Schooners.

    Tigers win

    • The Connecticut Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-1 in a New York-Penn League game. Jordan Pearce had an RBI double, Luke Burch and Garrett McCain had run-scoring singles and Colby Bortles hit a sacrifice fly in the Tigers' fifth. Pearce (two RBI) and Burch had two hits each for the Tigers (17-16). Matt Manning (2-1) got the win, allowing three hits over five shutout innings.  

    SEC 16-18 playoffs

    • East Lyme White beat East Lyme Black 13-2 in the losers' bracket final in a game that ended after six innings on a mercy rule. East Lyme White will play unbeaten Waterford Blue in the championship round Sunday at Waterford High School at 6 p.m. A second game will follow if East Lyme wins.

    Peter Tauro and Mike Cohan pitched three innings each for White and struck out three each. Jackson Deweese had three hits and drove in three runs, Cohan drove in two runs and Jon Keens had two hits and drove in a run for White.

    Speedbowl

    • Dan Meservey of Pro-Modifieds and The Speedbowl’s George Whitney announced that a special Pro-4 Modified Connecticut Championship Series will be running at The New London-Waterford Speedbowl. The Series will be separate from the Pro-4 Series (Club Version) and the dates of the four events are August 5, August 26, September 16 and October 21 — The Speedbowl’s Finale weekend.

    Since the Pro-4 Modified runs Limited’s and Unlimited Modifieds, the two groups will offer Championships in both groups at The Speedbowl.

    Road racing

    • Matthew Drummond of Wyoming, R.I., won the Blessing of the Fleet 5K at Stonington with a time of 18:44. Elizabeth Krenicky of Burlington was the top women's finisher in 20:23, good for third place.

    Rounding out the top 10 were Zachary Nordstrom of Stonington (19:51), Linda Spooner of Sturbridge, Mass. (20:39), Stonington's Patrick McGugan (21:23), Chris Bowdler (21:26) and Max Wojtas (21:31), Sam Banks of Pawcatuck (21:42), Eric Garofano of Mystic (21:50) and Matthew Narducci of Pawcatuck (22:11).
