Local roundup: Waterford hires Fleming as girls' basketball coach

Waterford — An assistant women's basketball coach at Connecticut College for the past four seasons with vast experience coaching at the high school level, as well, Brian Fleming was named the Waterford High School girls' basketball coach Monday.

Fleming takes over for Mark Capasso, who retired following last season, in which the Lancers were 20-6 overall with an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II title and a berth in the Class M state tournament semifinals.

Prior to Conn, Fleming spent nine seasons as the head girls' basketball coach at Glastonbury, where his teams won 138 games and three consecutive Central Connecticut Conference championships. He also works as a statistical analyst for the Connecticut Sun.

Fleming is a graduate of East Hampton High School, where he is a member of the Bellringers' Athletic Hall of Fame and went on to play basketball at Roger Williams, where he is a member of the 1,000-point club.

"We feel Brian is going to be a great addition to our athletic department. He brings a wealth of basketball knowledge to our competitive girls' program," Waterford athletic director Dave Sousa said in a press release. "We look forward to continued success and growth under coach Fleming’s direction."
