    Local colleges: CGA men beat Pine Manor 2-0

    New London — Coast Guard Academy controlled play in Friday night's non-conference men's soccer game against Pine Manor College.

    It just took awhile for the Bears, who held a 26-4 edge in shots, to find the back of the net in a 2-0 victory.

    They finally broke through late in the first half when junior Griffin Klages scored off a corner kick at the 40:02 mark. Junior Landon Klopfenstein added a second half tally at the 68:37 mark.

    Montville graduate Jake Sorenson had a quiet night in goal, earning the shutout without making a save. Freshman Daniel Taglianetti had two assists and Seth Anderson added one assist for the Bears, who improved to 2-1.

    Volleyball

    • Sam Hunter had 12 kills and 11 digs to power Connecticut College past Worcester State, 27-25, 25-13 and 25-14. Kate Elisman had 27 assists and Jenny Kellogg added eight kills for the Camels. Also on Friday, Conn (3-0) beat Regis College, 3-1. Game scores were 25-17, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-14. 

    • Coast Guard rolled past Nichols College, 25-8, 25-9 and 25-5, behind Bridget Boyle who had 16 kills and nine digs. Alexi Deane added eight kills for the Bears. Also on Friday, CGA beat Western Connecticut State University, 3-0, behind Angelou Dunton's four kills and 10 digs. Game scores were 25-17, 25-22, 29-27. The Bears are 4-2.

    Field hockey

    • Charlotte Veitner scored four goals to power No. 2 UConn past Pacific 6-2. Junior Amanda Collins chipped in three assists while junior Amelia Iacobucci and Margo van Hecking Colenbrander also scored for the Huskies (4-0). 

    Women's soccer

    • UConn freshman Kess Elmore scored with 1:43 left in the first overtime period to lead the Huskies to a 2-1 win over Arkansas on Thursday night. The Razorbacks (4-3) outshot UConn 25-8. Elmore scored her game-winner on a breakaway from 16 yards out as junior Vivien Beil picked up the assist. The Huskies (2-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute as Alex Casimiro scored off a scrum in front of the net.
