    Local roundup: LaFrance Boyce leads Avery Point to victory

    Warwick, R.I. — Tatyana LaFrance Boyce scored 28 points as the Avery Point women's basketball team beat Genesee Community College 98-66 in the Community College of Rhode Island Invitational on Sunday.

    LaFrance Boyce, the former Stonington standout, also had 13 rebounds and eight steals. Egypt Santos had 18 points, Meagan Bianchi and Edona Thaqi each scored 16 and Sha'La Jones and Waterford's Mia Brennan had 10 points each for the Pointers (11-5).

    Men's hockey

    • Connecticut College jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on to beat Amherst 3-2 in a New England Small College Athletic conference game. Paul Capozzi, Kyle Moss and Kevin Doyle scored goals, Connor Rodericks made 33 saves and Ryan Petti, Brett Stirling, Brendan O'Connell and Bryan Ackil had assists for Conn (5-8, 5-3). Joey Lupo had a goal and an assist for Amherst (5-6-3, 3-3-3).

    College wrestling

    • No. 20 Coast Guard went 2-1 in a quad-match, beating Southern Maine 25-18 and Norwich University 50-0 before losing to host No. 4 Johnson & Wales 43-0. Owen McClave (133 pounds), Nick Remke (165) and Jeremy Berson (184) won two matches each for Coast Guard (4-3).   

    Road racing

    • Brian Whitney of Niantic won the Kelley's Pace Frostbite 5K on Saturday in Mystic. Whitney's time was 31:24 and Linda Spooner of Sturbridge, Mass., was the top women's finisher, coming in eighth with a time of 33:42.

    Also finishing in the top 10 were Matt Mantikas of East Hampton (31:48), Carson Riley of Mystic (31:52), Michael Fleming of New London (32:53), David Hartmann of Middletown (32:59), Justin Madry of Waterford (33:25), Eric Ciocca of Northampton, Mass. (33:41), Brent Wiltshire of Stonington (34:18) and Steven Decastro of Pawcatuck (34:26).
