Former St. Bernard star Fordyce coaching at Keiser

Former St. Bernard baseball star Brook Fordyce picked up his first win as head coach of the Keiser University baseball team on Friday.

Keiser, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) program, beat Point University 13-8 in the first game of a doubleheader to even its record at 1-1. Fordyce was named coach at Keiser, located in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in August.

Fordyce, who grew up in East Lyme and Old Lyme, graduated from St. Bernard in 1989 and was selected in the third round of Major League's Baseball's Amateur Draft by the New York Mets that year. He reached the majors with the Mets in 1995.

Fordyce went on to play with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1996 through 2004. His best season came in 2000 when he batted .301 with 14 homers and 49 RBI in 93 games, splitting the season between the White Sox and Orioles. He finished his career with a .258 average with 41 homers.
