Local roundup: NL freshman Powell-Keyton reaches State Open wrestling semis

New Haven — New London freshman Naaji Powell-Keyton won a pair of matches on Friday night to advance to the semifinals of the State Open wrestling tournament at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Powell-Keyton, who placed third in the 106-pound division during last week's Class M tournament, will be joined in the semis by four local seniors — Fitch's Jarod Kosman (113) and Dakota Grover (220), Montville's Noah Caskey (132) and Ledyard's Richard Mullaney (285).

The semifinal round will take place on Saturday at approximately 12:30 p.m., with the finals set for 5:15 p.m.

Powell-Keyton began the tournament with a 9-4 victory over Hall's Drew Currier in the second round (he received a bye in the first round) and then pinned Class S champion Jacob Marselli of East Catholic in 1 minute, 4 seconds in the quarters. He will face Class LL champion Thomas Finn of Simsbury in the semis.

While Powell-Keyton's success was a surprise, Kosman, Grover, Caskey and Mullaney — all state champions in their respective class meets — expected to make deep runs in the tournament.

Kosman beat Christian Chadwick of Amity by technical fall (17-2) in the second round and earned a 10-2 major decision of Glastonbury's Parker Sutton in the quarters. Kosman will face Morgan's Louis Bradley in the semis.

Kosman's teammate Grover dominated both of his opponents, pinning Haddam-Killingworth's Trevor Hines in 32 seconds in the second round and needing just 1:35 to pin Danbury's Montez Osbey in the quarters. He will face Foran's Qasim Khan in the semis.

Caskey beat Griswold's Vashil Patel by major decision, 20-8, in the second round and defeated Xavier's James Lunt 8-4 in the quarters. He will face Hand's Mark Hartmann in the semis.

Mullaney, meanwhile, pinned Bristol Central's John Duncan in 1:16 in the second round before outlasting Newtown's Joe Zeller 5-1 in the quarters. Mullaney's next opponent in the semis is reigning Open champion Michael Burchell of Hand.

Five other Eastern Connecticut Conference wrestlers advanced to the semis, including three from ECC tournament champion Killingly — Dan Charron (106), Zack Burgess (145) and ZachCaffrey (182). Windham's Alejandro Garcia (113) and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech's Mason LaFlam (170) also advanced.

Danbury leads the team race with 82.5 points followed by Bristol Eastern (64) and Xavier (50.5).
