Brookline, Mass. — The Mitchell College women's basketball team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the New England Collegiate Conference with an 81-44 win over Newbury College on Tuesday.

The Mariners improved to 11-8 overall, 10-2 in the NECC. Becker College and New England College also are 10-2 in the league.

Freshman Amina Wiley led the way with team highs in points and rebounds with 18 and 12, respectively, while freshman Le'Sandra Turner scored 16 points and freshman Ramzie Jones came off the bench to score a season-high 15. Senior Francesca Pinard had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Mariners, who raced out to a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

    Women's hockey

    • Jane Morrisette scored two goals just over three minutes apart in the second period to break a scoreless tie, as UMass Boston blanked Connecticut College, 3-0, in a non-conference game. Goalie Carly Denora had 14 saves for the Camels (8-7-2).

    Men's hockey

    • UConn fell into a 2-0 hole and never recovered, losing to Sacred Heart, 2-1. Karl El-Mir scored a third period goal for the Huskies (7-15-2), who are 0-4-1 in their last five games. Ryan Steele had a goal and goalie Josh Benson made 33 saves for the Pioneers (8-13-3).

     College track

    • For the first time in her career, Coast Guard Academy sophomore Kaitlyn Mooney has been named the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA. Mooney posted the third fastest time in NCAA Division III indoor track history in the 3,000 meters with a time of nine minutes, 27.25 seconds last weekend at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University. That left her just three seconds shy of the second fastest mark all-time of 9:24.34 set by Felicia Koerner of Johns Hopkins. She also was a part of the distance medley relay team that finished second overall.
