    Local colleges: Baldez, Witkowski lead CGA to victory

    New London — Noah Baldez's jumper with 1.2 seconds left lifted Coast Guard Academy to a 68-66 win over Clark in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday.

    Coast Guard junior Packy Witkowski became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark. He finished with 16 points, giving him 1,005. Justin Kane had eight points and a season-high 14 rebounds and Baldez scored 16 for the Bears (15-7, 6-6). Clark (5-18, 1-11) scored just three points in the final 9:18 of the game.

    In other games:

    • Mitchell Holdmeyer had 11 points and 18 rebounds as Avery Point beat Northern Essex 74-72. JR Gandenberger of East Lyme had a season-high 17 points, Trevor Yeomans of Waterford scored 16 and Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd had nine points and eight rebounds for the Pointers (9-17).

    • Connecticut College concluded its season with a 72-66 loss to Colby in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Dan Draffan had 21 points and seven rebounds, Jack Zimmerman had 17 points and eight rebounds and David Labossiere had 10 points and seven rebounds in his final game for Conn (7-17, 0-10). 

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College won its fifth straight, beating Southern Vermont 74-34 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Amina Wiley had 20 points and 14 rebounds, Jessica Lohneiss had a career-high 18 points and Francesca Pinard scored 17 for Mitchell (15-8, 14-2), which forced 31 turnovers.

    • Sami Ashton scored 22 points as Conn College beat Colby 67-65 in the NESCAC. Margaret Corcoran had 15 points and eight rebounds for Conn (13-10, 4-6).

    • Micaela Martinelli scored 13 and had eight rebounds as Coast Guard beat Wellesley 49-40 in the NEWMAC. Freshman Kyra Hartman scored 12 points and freshman Emma Puddington had 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Coast guard (7-16, 5-9).

    • Waterford's Mia Brennan scored 45 points for Avery Point, but the Pointers lost to New Hampshire Technical Institute 92-82. Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 15 points and 20 rebounds, Julitza Delgado had 10 points, Miriam Dugas had 10 rebounds and Brennan had six assists, five steals and five rebounds for the Pointers (10-12).

    Men's hockey

    • Freshman Jonny Evans scored twice and had two assists as UConn beat Merrimack 5-0 in Hockey East. Ruslan Iskhakov and Benjamin Freeman had a goal and an assist each, Zac Robbins scored and freshman Tomas Vomacka made 29 saves for his first shutout. UConn (9-17-2, 4-12-2) won in front of a crowd of 8,211, the largest crowd for the Huskies at the XL Center.

    • Amherst scored twice in the second period to rally for a 3-2 win over Conn College in the NESCAC. Anthony Quatieri and Ryan Petti had first-period goals to give Conn (6-15-1, 2-13-1) a 2-1 lead. Paul Capozzi had two assists, Kyle moss had an assist and Avery Gobbo made 35 saves for Conn.

    Women's hockey

    • Conn Colllege and Bowdoin played a 0-0 tie in a NESCAC game. Bowdoin outshot Conn 29-25. Bailey Mertz made 29 saves for Conn (10-8-3, 6-5-3).  

    Women's indoor track

    • Coast Guard's Kaitlyn Mooney shattered the school record in the 5K while running the fastest time in the nation among Division III runners at the David Hemery Invite on Friday night at Boston University. Mooney, a sophomore, finished in 16:27.30, breaking the old school record by 1:22. The Bears had two other school records as junior Adora Lawrence ran the 400-meter race in 57.71 and senior Anita Green ran the 1,000 in 2:58.97.
