    Local roundup: East Lyme gains a share of ECC Division I baseball championship

    Norwich — East Lyme knocked off Norwich Free Academy 7-1 Thursday to finish in a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I baseball standings.

    The Vikings shared the championship with Fitch and Waterford, all 4-2 in the division. Fitch denied Waterford an outright title with a 3-2 win on Thursday night.

    Trystan Levesque earned the win, allowing one run over six innings and striking out eight, while Chris Malcom chipped in three hits and Luke Leonard drove in four runs for East Lyme (11-8 overall). Jake Schelkly doubled.

    For NFA (10-10, 0-6), Nick Gallivan had a single and double while Kevin Pomroy and Jaisyn Bulkley also doubled.

    In other games:

    • Grasso Tech reached the .500 mark with a 13-2 win over Vinal Tech in a Connecticut Technical Conference game, which ended after five innings on a mercy rule. Robert Holland, Cameron Chenot and Derek Nunez had two hits each for Grasso (7-7), which started the season 0-5. Chenot scored three runs and Johancy Baez scored twice.

    • Brandon Mayersohn and Chace Davidson had two hits apiece in Norwich Tech's 11-1 win over Windham. David Wyatt earned the win, allowing four hits in five innings.

    • Bowen Baker had a hit and two RBI in Wheeler's 17-4 loss to Griswold in the Division IV action. Aiden Cameron had two hits for the Lions (4-11, 4-3).

    • Pete Kiefer had a single, double, triple and three RBI for No. 7 Ledyard in a 10-6 win over New London. Cade Walters had two hits and drove in three runs for the Colonels, who finishe the regular season 17-3. Gerjuan Tyus and Rob Otanez had three hits apiece for the Whalers (2-16).

    Softball

    • Kassidy Standish went 2-for-2 with three RBI and also pitched a no-hitter, lifting Old Lyme past Westbrook 14-0 in a Shoreline Conference game that lasted five innings. Standish struck out six and walked one. Victoria Gage had two hits and an RBI and Paige Kolesnik had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI for the Wildcats (11-6, 11-4). 

    • Bailey Comeau tossed a one-hitter, striking out 15 and walking three, to power NFA past Montville 12-0. Comeau only allowed Alexis Michon's third-inning single and also had two hits, including a solo home run. Hailee Schrader had two doubles and a single and Sara Cote doubled twice while Julie Vincent singled and tripled and Brooke Gottshall had two singles for the Wildcats (14-4).

    • Taina Quinones went 4-for-4 and Emily Nelson added three hits, including a home run, and two RBI in St. Bernard's 14-7 win over Bacon Academy. Ariana Guinassi had two hits and three RBI while Taryn Bellinger had two hits and two RBI and Meghan Bergeron added two hits and an RBI for the Saints (7-9).

    • Caylee Parker struck out 13 of the 18 batters she faced as New London beat Capital Prep 17-0 in a five-inning, nonleague game. Parker allowed one hit and walked one. Bria Fielding had two hits and drove in three runs, Cassandra Roman doubled twice and scored three runs and Finella Smith, Alexia Liriano and Jaelynn Potter drove in two runs each for the Whalers (10-9.) 

    Boys' tennis

    • Stonington made quick work of New London, beating the Whalers 7-0. Jake Stiger, William Michelson, Sean Bessette and Nathan Gonzalez were straight-set singles winners for the Bears (14-1) while the teams of Graham Johnstone-Kyle Remmert, Quinn Hamilton-Filip Aubrecht and Justin Johannsen-Jack Ramsdell won doubles matches. New London is 7-9.

    Girls' tennis

    • New London swept all four singles matches on the way to a 6-1 win over Bacon Academy. Cassandra Cannon, Francesca Ledoux, Keren Gabriel and Luisanny Castillo were victorious for the Whalers (10-8), as were the doubles teams of Mary Lembree-Emily Fielding and Nayeli Lazoda-Christmaela Bouquet.

    • Old Lyme improved to 18-1 overall with a 5-2 win over Valley Regional in a Shoreline Conference match. Emma Bass earned a hard-fought win at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, and Brynn McGlinchey and Olivia Schaedler also won in singles.

    • East Lyme swept doubles play in a 6-1 win over Ledyard. Becca Paggioli, Yurina Shirai and Sophie Rogers won singles matches for the Vikings (6-6) along with the teams of Emily Zhu-Liz Beaulieu, Caroline French-Grace Foltz and Sophie Arustei-Hannah Scott. Abby Dirico won at No. 1 singles for Ledyard (5-9). 

    Sun waive Magarity

    • The Connecticut Sun have waived Regan Magarity, a 6-foot-3 forward from Virginia Tech. Magarity was selected by the Sun with the 33rd overall pick in this year's WNBA Draft, but was used sparingly in Connecticut's first two preseason games, playing eight minutes with four rebounds, one point and one assist.

    The Sun roster is now down to 14 players, and two more cuts must be made before the season-opener on May 25 against the Washington Mystics at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sun play their final preseason game at 2 p.m. Sunday against the New York Liberty in Albany, N.Y.

    College honors

    • Avery Point third baseman Alex Petchark has named a NJCAA Region 21 Rawlings Gold Glove Award recipient for his defense. Waterford's Petchark registered 51 assists and seven putouts and posted a .906 fielding percentage.
