    Local roundup: NFA, Montville break top 4 at Griswold Invite

    Griswold — Norwich Free Academy finished third at the 14-team Griswold Mid-Season Invitational wrestling meet on Sunday and fellow Eastern Connecticut Conference member Montville was fourth.

    Staples won the event with 210 points, Chariho, R.I. was second with 146, NFA had 142, Montville scored 117 and East Lyme/Norwich Tech was 10th with 66 points.

    Montville's Quinn Bond was the winner at 106 pounds and NFA's Dominic Renfree won at 132. Local wrestlers with second-place finishes were NFA's Connor DeVega (126), Mason McMahon (182) and Ruben Britos (285) along with Roark Ryan of East Lyme/Norwich Tech (220).

    Third places went to Montville's Brandon Peterson (152), Mick Wynosky (138) and Somuadina Agunyego (285) and Savannah Vanase of NFA (113). Coming in fourth were Joseph Morse (106) and Michael minevich (138) of East Lyme/Norwich Tech, NFA's Christian Gervais (195) and Thomas Brunelli (120) and Montville's Zach Doiron (220). Kyle Merritt of Chariho (145) was the outstanding wrestler. 

    College wrestling

    • The top two Division III teams in New England met in the finals of the New England Dual Championships, with host No. 6 Johnson & Wales beating No. 10 Coast Guard 30-8. Coast Guard (4-2) beat Norwich 43-0, Southern Maine 37-3 and Western New England 35-8 in the semifinals.

    Paul Detwiler (184 pounds) won all four of his matches and AJ Aeberli (174), Jon Wagner (197), Liam Logue (133) and AJ Pagliarulo (149) won three matches each for Coast Guard.

    Men's basketball

    • Derrius Ward scored 20 points as St. Thomas More beat Wilbraham & Monson 67-74 in the Hoophall Classic at Springfield, Mass. Ward, who had five rebounds, was named game MVP. The Chancellors (19-1) have won 12 straight. 

    • Wesleyan beat Connecticut College 98-59 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Daniel Draffan scored 17 points, Ben McPherron and Patrick Lazor scored 11 each, Jack Zimmerman had four assists and Lazor had six rebounds for Conn (3-12, 0-3).

    Women's basketball

    • Conn College lost to Wesleyan 66-58 in a NESCAC game. Sami Ashton had 25 points and six rebounds, Claire Gulbin scored 14, Dana Muckstadt had eight rebounds and Casey Walsh had six rebounds for Conn (5-10, 1-2).  

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard beat Merchant Marine for the 21st straight time, beating their rival 195-105 on Saturday. The win, coupled with the men's victory, gives Coast Guard a 9-1 lead in the race for the Superintendent's Trophy. Sarah Passilla won three events for the Bears, taking the 200 freestyle (2:00.87), 100 freestyle (55.83) and 200 individual medley (2:17.28).

    Josie McGuire won the 1,000 freestyle (10:54.45) and 500 freestyle (5:18.50) and Taylor Young won both diving events on Friday night. Also winning events for Coast Guard (5-5) were Katie Dennin, Ashley Fuller and Sophia Furigay while Emily Benson, Melody Pompay and Lindsay Blake helped the Bears sweep the relays.

    • Maddie Ford (100 freestyle, 52.76) was the lone winner for Conn College in its 224-64 loss to No. 10 Williams on Saturday. Tiernan Shea (100 backstroke, 57.96) and Brynn Campbell (100 butterfly, 1:00.07) both had runner-up finishes for Conn.

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard won the final event, the 200 freestyle relay, to beat Merchant Marine 152.5-147.5. Devin McClure, Tyler Dominick, Tyler Bland and Joe Rodriguez won the relay in 3:08.47. McClure also won three events, taking the 200 freestyle (1:44.99), 100 freestyle (46.95) and 500 freestyle (4:50.04).

    Other winners for Coast Guard (7-2) were Derek Ledford, CJ Omweg and Rodriguez.

    • Conn College won three events in its 206-88 loss to No. 11 Williams on Saturday. Charlie Adl (200 freestyle, 1:41.98), and Dash Hunter (200 breaststroke, 2:11.38), and Colin Merrill (the 400 individual medley, 4:07.87) for the Camels.

    H.S. indoor track

    • NFA's Paige Martin, who won the pole vault at the SCC Coaches Invitational in New Haven on Saturday, broke the school indoor record for the fourth time this season. Her winning vault of 12-feet, 6-inches also broke the meet record and earned her the MVP Coaches Award.
