Stonington police board tables Mystic race request

Mystic - The Stonington Board of Police Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to table a decision until next month on plans by the Hartford Marathon Foundation and Mystic Rotary Club to stage a June 28 half-marathon expected to attract more than 1,000 runners.

While saying they support the idea of the race, several commission members said they would like the organizers to first ask residents and businesses along the race course, especially those along Coogan Boulevard, if they have concerns about the impact of the event. They also want to ensure there is enough parking for the competitors and those accompanying them.

Board member Ray Trebisacci said the race will a have a significant impact on the community and he is worried about upset residents later asking "why did you approve a race without consulting us?"

"The last thing I want is some disgruntled residents," he said.

Board member Patrick Moukawsher agreed, saying that he did not want to approve the race and "then have a lot of people come in and complain."

"It's kind of what we expected. They need time to digest everything," past Rotary President Barry Saluk said after the meeting.

He said comments and concerns can be directed to the Rotary website: http://www.mysticrotary.org/ContactUs.cfm or by writing to Mystic Rotary, P.O. Box 153, Mystic, CT 06355.

Josh Miller, the technical director of the Hartford Marathon Foundation, added that he understood the board's concerns. He said the one-month delay would not endanger staging the race in June. The foundation typically begins promoting its 2015 race schedule, which includes about 30 events across the state, in January.

Since meeting with police, the organizers have modified the starting area in Olde Mistick Village to lessen any problems at the intersection of Clara Drive and Coogan Boulevard.

The 13.1-mile race would also need approval from the Town of Groton and the state of Connecticut, as the course would traverse River Road in Groton and sections of state roads such as Route 27, Route 1 and Pequot Trail.

Plans call for the race to begin at 7 a.m. in the Olde Mistick Village parking lot, then head down Route 27 to the downtown and across the drawbridge onto the Groton side of the village. The race will then head down River Road, turn onto the northern section of Route 27 and then on to Jerry Browne Road, Mistuxet Avenue Extension, Pequot Trail, Flanders Road, Deans Mill Road and back to Mystic Aquarium.

The Mystic Rotary Club would provide volunteers and receive a charitable contribution. Saluk said the Rotary was looking for an event to replace its annual Lobsterfest.

"Everyone spoke highly of the Hartford Marathon Foundation," he said.
