Choir hopes to pass 'Go' with funds from Stonington Monopoly game

Stonington - Monopoly will soon come in a Stonington version.

Parents and others involved with the Calvary Church children's choir, known as the Calvary Choristers, are now completing the design for a Stonington Monopoly game. Proceeds from its sales will be used to help send the choir to the United Kingdom next year to sing in two cathedrals.

Although there are a few spots left on the board, many of the 40 already have been reserved by local businesses and organizations who have paid $285 to place their logo or photograph on the full-color board. That revenue will pay for a Michigan company to produce 500 copies of the game.

The game is expected to be available in May at a tentative price of $30.

"It's really going to be fun to play when we get done," said parent Amy Hambly, one of those who has been working on the game.

She said a number of businesses and hotels have pledged to help sell the game or buy one to have on hand. She said one local real estate firm plans to give the game to clients who buy a home in town.

"Everyone has been extremely supportive. They are so excited about the game," she said.

Hambly said with bad weather affecting business this winter, it would have been difficult to simply ask for donations for the trip. But with the game, she said, businesses are receiving the benefit of having a permanent advertisement that people will see every time they play.

She said the project has been very time consuming, "but it will be so cool when it gets done." She said depending on the success of the game, a "Mysticopoly" may be in the future.

While the layout of the board is still being finalized, the Old Lighthouse Museum and Palmer House will occupy the prized "Boardwalk" and "Park Place" positions because of their landmark status.

The game pieces, which are being designed and cast by a Rhode Island company, all have meaning to the town. They include a scallop, speedboat, sailboat, lighthouse, Calvary Church and a cannon.

The choir, directed by Joseph Ripka, is planning a 10-day trip in July 2016 to sing at seven services at Lichfield Cathedral in Lichfield, England, and St. Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. Between 18 and 20 children are expected to make the trip along with six to eight adults.

The choir comprises children in kindergarten through grade 12, and members do not have to belong to Calvary Church or even be Episcopalian. The choir is scheduled to perform May 1 at the La Grua Center in the borough. It also can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RabwZ1mNCZo.
