La Grua Center hosting program on steamships in Long Island Sound

Stonington - From 1837 to 1912, the borough was a bustling steamship port with luxury vessels providing a link between New York City and the rail line heading north. Passengers often stayed at the large Wadawanuck Hotel that once stood on Wadawanuck Square.

On March 18 at 6 p.m. at the La Grua Center, Guilford author and maritime historian Norman Brouwer will discuss that time period in the village as he presents a program based on research and images from his recently published book "Steamboats on Long Island Sound." For more than 30 years, Brouwer was the maritime historian and librarian for the South Street Seaport Museum. Brouwer is expected to illustrate his talk with historical images of the paddlewheel steamers. The event is open to the public.
