Norwich to host hearing on public transportation

Norwich — The Connecticut Public Transportation Commission will host a public hearing at Norwich City Hall at 7 p.m. May 5.

This will be the first of three hearings statewide this spring to gather testimony from the public, transportation providers, public officials and other entities concerning the operation of public transportation services, dial-a-ride and ADA transportation and other issues, the state Public Transportation Commission said in a news release.

The commission seeks public comment on how services are meeting public needs, as well as suggested improvements or new services needed.

In particular, the commission is seeking comment on local and regional issues including the adequacy of Southeast Area Transit (SEAT) bus service, the need for inter-regional transit connections to locations in Connecticut and in neighboring states, the adequacy of Shore Line East service, improvements and facilities to meet bicycle transportation needs, and the value of the upgrade of the New England Central Railroad to handle 286,000-pound cars, the commission said.

The commission will use the testimony from the hearings in preparing recommendations for its annual report to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, the commissioner of transportation and the Transportation Committee of the General Assembly.

In addition to the May 5 hearing in Norwich, the commission’s other spring public hearings will be May 13 in Plainville at the Municipal Center and June 3 in Hamden at the Government Center, both at 7 p.m. The commission will hold additional public hearings in the fall.
