Ocean Community YMCA receives prestigious financial development award

Mystic — The Ocean Community YMCA received the Eagle Award for outstanding achievement in financial development at the North American YMCA Development Organization in Atlanta last week.

The Eagle award recognizes YMCAs that have created a culture of philanthropy within their organizations and throughout the communities they serve.

Ten years ago the YMCA raised $100,000 annually compared to the its recently completed annual campaign that raised more than $450,000. The funding helps the YMCA provide memberships, program participation and summer camp to individuals who otherwise could not afford them. In 2014, it provided more than 2,900 individuals with financial assistance while 27 percent of the children who attended its two summer day camps received financial aid. The YMCA also undertook a capital campaign in 2008 to upgrade and expand it Westerly branch. It also has branches in Mystic and Wyoming, R.I.

“The great success of the YMCA’s financial development program means more individuals and families have the opportunity to experience all that the Y has to offer. At the core of our mission is our pledge to provide programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The philanthropic culture that exists in our community and at our Y makes it possible to fulfill this promise,” wrote Vice President of Operations Tim Babcock in an email.
